Felt Gave Identity Away in 1976, Book Reveals - (Woodward's new book, "The Secret Man")

In "The Secret Man," to be published next week by Simon & Schuster, Woodward writes that he learned in 1976 from then-assistant attorney general Stanley Pottinger that Felt, who had been the number two man at the FBI, had given himself away while testifying before a grand jury. Asked "Were you Deep Throat," Felt initially said "No," but his manner alerted Pottinger to the probability that he was lying.

Woodward also reveals for the first time the address of the famous Virginia parking garage where most of his meetings with Deep Throat were conducted: 1401 Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn. The garage entrance he used is now 1820 North Nash Street.

"The Secret Man" includes a chapter written by Woodward's Watergate reporting partner, Carl Bernstein. In it, Bernstein recounts a conversation the two reporters deliberately excluded from their 1974 book, "All the President's Men."

In the fall of 1972, Bernstein writes, as he and Woodward were about to write the first story pointing to former Attorney General John Mitchell's involvement in the scandal, he realized that President Richard M. Nixon was likely to be impeached. Woodward "looked at me for a second or two in the strangest way," Bernstein writes, then said, "Jesus, I think you're right."

In those grand jury proceedings, Woodward writes,
Pottinger quietly reminded Felt that he was under oath. He
then offered to withdraw the question as irrelevant to the
subject of investigation, which was illegal break-ins
conducted by the FBI in pursuit of antiwar radicals from
the Weather Underground. Pottinger told Woodward, who
didn't confirm his conclusion, that he would keep it to
himself.

"To his eternal credit," Woodward writes, he did just
that.

Pottinger was acting in collusion with Woodward?

I suspect Woodward has also done a lot of lying about this.

This book is mis-titled.

It should be: "All About Me"

Ah yes, the good ole days when whistle blowers were heroes and reporters were just doing their jobs. Yep, nothing biased went on then, nope, nada, none! :-)

Seems like collusion of a kind. Watergate reporting smells. We have an agent of the U.S. gov't, an FBI wheel, put in charge of located Deep Throat who was in fact (supposedly) Deep Throat. He clearly violated law and ethics to feed his friend information. He clearly had a personal agenda. Imagine if he'd been revealed as the source in a scandal today. We'd know his agenda, his position and so forth. Something the public *should've* been able to evaluate back then. Lord knows if Dick Nixon had been a Dem, the Post would've spiked the story as its sister-publication Newsweek did to the Clinton/Monica story. The Clinton machine destroyed good people, people trying to do the right thing and got away with it. Totally the opposite of Watergate. Clinton had lied under oath! No question about it. As an officer of the court, even. And still the media machine ensured the public didn't care by allowing Starr to be demonized, Trip to be demonized, etc.

We didn't even have that much on Nixon's involvement.

What, in truth, was the 'horror' of Watergate? It was a second-rate burglary after all without the slam-dunk proof of the Clinton high crimes and misdemeanors.

The contrast between the treatment of Watergate and Monica figures is staggering.

What EVIL compels the Democrats to destroy, destroy, destroy? They took out Nixon and tried to avoid confirming Ford in order to stage a coup. They went after Reagan/Bush on Iran/Contra. They threatened impeachment if Bush 41 went to Baghdad thus we left the Iraqi people hanging and slaughtered by Saddam's death squads. They've threatened impeachment of W since before he was sworn in and they're pushing this questionable memo as a basis. It's a SICKNESS.

I'll never forgive the Bush administration for not investigating Felt/Deep Throat for violations of law. It's just one more blight on their mediocre record along with the wide-open borders. Just because you blow the wistle, doesn't mean you can do it through illegal means. Someone needs to ask Linda Trip about that.

Definition -- Woodward, Washington Post and New York Times STAR reporters:

(1) stenographers for the FBI and assorted powerful liberals. (2) High level press release recipients.
