God is a jealous God.
In your theory, those who had a sense of God but were pagans, worshipped idols, whatever....all could be saved as long as they had a sense that "god" would send a "redeemer" to give them eternal life.

What about good moral people who died before Christ came to earth (like all the prophets of the OT).?.

There are more than three chapters in Genesis.

Thanks. As I suspected, the premise of the thread is full of crap. I believe St. Paul makes much the same point as Graham, somewhere in Romans.

Heb 11 speaks volumes about faith. My group is going to do a Bible study on that chapter in the fall. I'm really looking forward to it.

So Billy is saying that if someone is good, they receive Christ, even if they follow Buddha?

Why preach the gospel then? Why should missionaries die working to translate scriptures? Why not just make sure Muslims are very good Muslims, Buddhists are very good Buddhists, etc.

So you are actually saying *with certainty* that people who died without ever hearing the gospel message are in hell? Yes I am. Its on Christ's authority that I base it upon
Following your logic, the 40 million or so aborted babies in this country over the last few decades are all in hell.

I guess the Great Commission should thus be amended:
All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you (But if you don't, that's okay... they are covered as long as they have some vague sense of God and try to be good people): and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world

Just a question. How was Moses saved since Jesus came after him?
Jesus death at one point in time (in the last days according to the Bible) made it possible for God to justify all those throughout human history who followed him by faith by crediting their faith as righteousness.

In your theory, those who had a sense of God but were pagans, worshipped idols, whatever....all could be saved as long as they had a sense that "god" would send a "redeemer" to give them eternal life. That's exactly what I'm *not* saying. Note that I specifically included the word "faith" several times in my post; I didn't include the weak phrase "sense of God." Those with faith in the One whose name they do not yet know will be saved.
Those who worship idols are worshiping idols rather than the One True God. There were numerous people before Jesus' arrival who rejected God, and there are numerous people now who, though they don't know the name of Jesus, are rejecting him.
In the end, it is good to share the Good News of salvation with those who haven't heard it. Living this life with the knowledge of Christ is a blessing, and it's good to share that. And apart from Christ there is no salvation at all.
In the end, it's a matter of the heart. A heart surrendered to God, with faith in Him, is saved through Jesus.

Those are just his words. If we disagree with them that is not going to change our beliefs. He can think that way if he'd like but most Christians would disagree. His words aren't the end-all of faith.

Why preach the gospel then? Why should missionaries die working to translate scriptures? Why not just make sure Muslims are very good Muslims, Buddhists are very good Buddhists, etc. Why not read what Rev. Graham actually said, rather than (rather unbiblically) consigning him to hell? Yes, we're to go out and preach the gospel, so that people know from Whom their salvation comes.
However, as St. Paul noted in Romans, the law is inscribed on our hearts. His point, and Billy Graham's, is simply that there are some folks who're already members of the Body of Christ, even if they don't know it.
Mr. Graham is saying neither more nor less than that.

I confess that most of this philosophical analysis of God is beyond me, and I guess that was the point of the answer that was givenby the former minister of our church.
