IOWAHAWK: War of the Worlds, the lost radio script

“War of the Worlds”
Alladin Radio Theater of the Air
CBS, Sunday October 30, 1938
Radioplay First Draft

ANNOUNCER
The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Alladin Theatre on the Air in "The War of the Worlds" by H. G. Wells. Brought to you Alladin long-leaf Persian cigarettes, for that rich long-lasting poppy flavor of the Casbah.

(MUSIC: ALLADIN THEATRE MUSICAL THEME, "THE SNAKE CHARMER")

ANNOUNCER
Ladies and gentlemen, the director of the Alladin Theatre and star of these broadcasts, Orson Welles.

ORSON WELLES
We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century this world was being watched closely by brains much greater than man's, and yet as mortal as his own. We know now that as human beings busied themselves about their various concerns, enjoying the rich, long-lasting poppy flavor of Alladin, now in a crush-proof box, they were scrutinized and studied -- perhaps as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm in a drop of water, or as a man with a telescope might hungrily study a lovely silhouette disrobe in a nearby apartment.

With infinite complacence the people went to and fro over the earth about their little affairs, some in the roomy liqui-cushioned mohair comfort of the all-new 1939 Kokomo Mogul 8, serene in the assurance of their dominion over this small, spinning flake of delicious celestial Oatabix which man has inherited out of the dark mystery of Time and Space.

Yet across an immense ethereal gulf, as wide as the stance on the new Kokomo Mogul 8, minds that are to our minds as ours are to the beasts in the jungle, intellects vast, cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes and slowly and surely drew their plans against us... waiting... watching...

Most listeners never heard Wells' introduction that this was a play, etc, because radios were manually tuned and it took time for listeners to come over from the very popular "Burns and Allen" on another network.

Awesome--but you have to be pretty familiar with the real script to appreciate some of the revisions.

I kept waiting for Philipps to suggest grasping a Martian tentacle and singing "Kumbaya".

It'd be great to go back in time and visit the classy "Bakelite Room"! LOL!

Dick Cheney has an AGP video card implanted in his chest? You'd think that the Vice President would at least have PCI Express or something.

No wonder Dick Cheney keeps going to the hospital - his damn PCI card is unplugged!

I have the audio and listen to it maybe once a year when I take long boring trips. It is surprising that anyone would be taken in by it, but many gullible listeners were.

Dang, I didn't know Dick Cheney starred in "Westworld," "Futureworld," and the "Six Million Dollar Man." B-) Looks like they took the pic from one of those movies/shoes.

No kidding. If I remember correctly (from age 14 or so), this passage replaces "serene in their assurance of their empire over matter." But the first paragraph or so is all I remember.

Kokomo and Oatabix were sponsors, I bet. The revisions are humorous and clever at the same time.

You sure? I've been looking for a '39 Kokomo Standard Deluxe 1-door coupe to chop & channel.

When you find one, post some pictures. I bet they look pretty mean.
