UNITED NATIONS, June 29 -- United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan asked the United States this week to consider sending troops to Haiti to support a U.N. peacekeeping mission beset by mounting armed challenges to its authority, according to senior U.N. officials.
Annan told Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a meeting at U.N. headquarters Tuesday afternoon that he may have to ask for American "boots on the ground" in the coming months to reinforce more than 6,500 Brazilian, Chilean, Argentine and other peacekeeping forces serving in Haiti, the officials said.
He expressed hope that the United States would participate in a planned U.N. rapid reaction force, authorized by the Security Council earlier this month, that would have the firepower to intimidate armed gangs threatening the country's fragile political transition. Officials said that similar requests are being considered for other countries, including Canada and France. "We want scarier troops," one senior U.N. official said.

Send Helen Thomas and Nancy Pelosi. I'd run like hell.
anyone visit the Korean war memorial lately? That was the last (and only) time the UN actually did something worthwhile
"Kofi , hey baby, listen , Abner Louima got all that cash, you give him a call ,OK?? Rev. Al has his number
Memo from Britain to Kofi: don't even think of calling us either.
Regards, Ivan
Mr. Annan can send himself. We've got bigger problems to deal with. He is so useless.

And as was pointed out here, where was he when we asked for UN help to deal with Iraq?
Make him say we were correct on the Iraq war and then he gets his troops.
Or the germans or the spanish? Tell the UN we are busy with more important things like carrying the load for everyone else in the war on terror.
Actually, Annan has been somewhat supportive of the Iraq efforts lately. Maybe he did it to set us up for the request for Haiti.
We're on the way, baby!
At least they're not asking the Chinese. I'd think they'd be all about getting UN approval to move troops and equipment into Haiti. And they're part of the UN security council. Part of me would really like to see other countries pulling some weight, part of me is glad they're somewhat choosy about who they ask to pull duty in this hemisphere.
Bill-bo sent the United States Armed Forces on more deployments around the world in his two terms then all other post-WWII presidents combined. The common thread to all those deployments was that no US interests were at stake.
Hey Kofi, we're otherwise occupied elsewhere if you hadn't noticed. Why do we have to always bail everybody else out when we can't even get your support in Iraq? The rest of the world must be militarily useless or are we just the easiest solution?
tell the liberals and these un, euro-weenie, schlocks to take this one on their own!

And usually, these deployments were done to divert attention every time he was in hot water, particularly over some babe humping.

Q: What's the difference between your average Gitmo detainee and your average Haitian citizen?
