NEW YORK (AP) - Three black men who ventured into a historically white neighborhood early Wednesday to steal a car were chased by a man with a baseball bat, police said. One man was beaten and suffered a fractured skull.
The attack happened several hours before dawn in the same section of the borough of Queens as an infamous 1986 beating of three black men whose car had broken down.
In Wednesday's attack, Nicholas Minucci, 21, was being charged with first-degree assault as a hate crime, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a news conference.
The three blacks told investigators they had been looking for a car to steal when they entered the Howard Beach neighborhood. They told police a white man in an SUV passed them in the street, exchanged stares with them and then returned with two friends and a baseball bat before chasing them on foot.
Glen Moore, 20, stumbled to the ground and was beaten, suffering a fractured skull. He was in serious condition. The other two men escaped and summoned police, who scouted the neighborhood with them and spotted the SUV again.
Police stopped the vehicle and found the bat inside. The driver was arrested, and officers were seeking two other suspects.
The hate crime charge is punishable by a minimum of eight years in prison. The district attorney said that he didn't know if Minucci had a lawyer and that he would be arraigned Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he and the police commissioner would not allow such "an ugly incident" to divide the city.
"We've accomplished too much to let that happen," he said, noting that the area had been free of such crimes for at least two years.
On Dec. 20, 1986, a group of white teenagers attacked three black men who were stranded in the neighborhood when their car stalled.
One of the men was fatally struck by a car as he fled. Another was beaten with a baseball bat and tree branches. The third escaped.
The attack ignited racial tension in New York and was compared to a lynching by then-Mayor Ed Koch. Eight of the teenagers were convicted or pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, assault, conspiracy and rioting.
And while there, were you calling people "Guido"? Because that really was the point. Not whether you could go there, but how receptive they would be to the term.
If you don't insult people, it's probably the safest neighborhood in NYC ... so it's not a real badge of courage just to go to the park unarmed.
However, if you ran around calling the guys "Guido", I might have a different opinion of your bravado (or intelligence) however.
would you assume that I carry one?
Someone mentioned that you were LEO, and most LEO's carry. If you're not an LEO, then I won't assume that any longer.
No, we didn't grow up together. We don't even know each other. I think it's just you, because everyone I grew up with in NYC knew the difference between a general discussion and a personal discussion when using the term "wife" and "daughter".
If I said "Look at the kid with the spiked hair ... would you let your daughter dress like that?". They wouldn't consider it pulling their relative into conversation. They would consider it a discussion of the person we were looking at, and we would discuss the relative merits of how appropriate we thought it was. We wouldn' duke it out because one of us said "your daughter". I would depend 100% on the context.
So, maybe you grew up in a part of NYC where they didn't know the difference. Thankfully, I did.
well , there is Sharpton on NY1 , yappin' about a march in Howard Beach ,... the cast of characters is taking shape
I'm surprised it took him this long. He must have been sleeping off a crack binge.
This should keep the Post and Daily News busy for a week or two. Maybe a "special insert" on the terrors racism or something too.
Here comes the field day ...
You're being too arrogant to understand you are committing the exact same transgression as what you objected to.
Oh, and be careful with your flippant euphamisms - I may live in Kansas, but I spent my formative years in upstate NY - learning to distrust city folk and islanders through hard won experience.
I love how the pc report says the black men "ventured" into the white neighborhod.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess.
When cops won't act, people are entitled to protect their own neighborhoods.
Just call this an enhanced Neighborhood Watch program.
What euphamism (sic) did I use?
I'm sorry that your life has been the sort that taught you to distrust people because of whence they come.
I know a lot of blacks who have chased another black down the street with a baseball bat, caught him too, and beat the snot out of him. But oh well.....
We need to have more interracial vigilante groups. Yep, thats the answer. Then, you'd have a different headline.
"Black republicans and whites chased.....".
I'd like to see the black community, bail the white guys out of jail, and throw the three car theifs in the river. But...... well
It just shows you how weak America has gotten when we have people saying that the SUV guy should have called the cops first.
What would the cops have done. Nada - a crime hadn't been commited yet. Shoot, the cops would have probably been fired for racial profiling.
Those thieves probably WERE caught stealing a car, we havn't heard the other side of the story yet. I'd say that is probably what happened or why would the punks confess?
Matter of fact, who says the SUV guy didn't call the cops. He might have and been told, "We can't do anything if a crime hasn't been commited".
Next time, throw the dang bat away.

Really? I was there researching a story about a rumble there two months ago that left a couple of guys stabbed...in mid-day.
Exactly. The 3 black guys were, at that point, just walking around. We know now that they were up to no good, but the attacker couldn't have known that for sure.
We don't know what words were exchanged, or if the three black youths were armed.
Maybe Kansas hasn't caught up.
Well, I can agree with that. Unfortunately, the article doesn't say if the 3 black guys were doing that.
Do a web search of the word guido and you come up with this: Note they describe a style, an attitude. Note also the phrase, "the community was ethnically broader than that" (Italian). Gee, pretty much what I said, ain't it?
Maybe Kansas hasn't caught up.
Well, I guess Columbine, Colorado is a crime-infested ghetto cause I heard more than a couple of people were taken out there by crazed gunman. And a bunch of guys were gunned down on Wonderland Dr. in the Hollywood Hills too. Neighborhood must be terribly dangerous. And some guy was also shot in Des Moines, Iowa and someone was attacked with a beer bottle in Nebraske. Steer clear of those places too.
Heck, everyplace I point to on a map seems to have some kind of incident that happened there.
I guess by your definition there really is noplace safe to live in the US.
I take it back, everyone steer clear of Carroll Gardens. Some guys got in a rumble two weeks ago, therefore, it must be a bad neighborhood.
As a matter of fact, that goes for every neighborhood in every city in America. Stay away from those too.
Everyone should get on a boat to Sweden right now. Doh! No wait, I hear there was a towel-snapping incident with the bikini team. No, no, avoid Sweden. Maybe Antartica ... but those penguins look so menacing. Oh dear ....
Then why the $#*^ would they admit to trying to steal a car?
We are just assuming he didn't. Did he see them jiggling car handles? We don't know. Why do we think he didn't? Just because he is white? Oh, he's white, he must have attacked them for NO reason unlike the reasonable black folks who never engage in violence without probable cause.
Come on guys, use your heads for something other than a hat rack.
You can't try to steal a car by simply standing around ... you have to, well, I dunno ... engaging in activity that would effectuate the theft of a car. Maybe someone witnessed it. The chances were great that someone witnessed it. They were black, not invisible.
so , NYC local Ch7[ABC] reporter Nina Pineda said ,"intolerance won't be tolerated..." no S**T , summer in NYC ,... will the cast of characters fit onstage?
Stranger's wife and daughters?
I didn't post that, someone else did.
Get your facts straight before you post.
What a loser.
