Special forces have "good intelligence" the al-Qaeda boss or a senior henchman is holed up in a Taliban enclave.

Two squadrons are on stand-by waiting for the go-ahead from reconnaissance troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

Specialist counter-terrorist soldiers in the rapid-deployment group are on high alert at the SAS's Hereford base.

The other team consists of troops serving around the world.

Commanders have insisted on waiting for news on the ground because of the cost of the operation, which could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds and stretch vital SAS resources.

A senior MOD source said last night: "Although this would cost a lot of money, if the intelligence was good the resources would be made available."

I hope they catch him, but they'll have a tough time doing it now that's it's all over the news. The terrorists keep very close watch on the western media, which is either too stupid not to publish this important info, or it just doesn't care.

Excellent question. They may be prompting OBL to flee, facilitating capture. I pray we catch him prior to the President's speech tonight.

Interesting even if the are telegraphing their intent. I wonder if the Pakistan internet outage has any thing to do with hindering terrorist communication.

HUH?

It never crossed my mind that the military (at least OUR military) thoughT in terms of money. I can see the concern for deploying men and resources poorly so they aren't available for more important operations. I can see confirming the target so you don't get civilians. But - confirming the target so you done't waste some money?

I've been saying he's dead for a couple of years. Still need to see a live body to be convinced I'm wrong, but I'll be happy to be wrong if they do get him. Burying him at the bottom of TB, while convenient, wasn't very satisfying.

"Two squadrons are on stand-by waiting for the go-ahead from reconnaissance troops on the ground in Afghanistan."

Translated from the diplomatic corps version of the military language dictionary, this means:

"We are giving him time to escape before we move in to take pictures of the nice cave he was living in."

I am all for freedom of the press, but come on. How are we to catch or kill him if he keeps getting tip offs from the press.
