ACTION ALERT * UNITED FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE www.unitedforpeace.org | 212-868-5545 |

ON DEFENSIVE, BUSH TO DELIVER "STAY THE COURSE" IRAQ SPEECH AT FT. BRAGG ON TUESDAY, 6/28 • If you can, join anti-war protest in Fayetteville, NC during Bush speech • Build on the anti-war momentum: Send a letter to the editor of your local paper • Keep up the pressure: Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and urge your member of Congress to join the Out of Iraq Caucus --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They're on the run.

On Tuesday, June 28, President Bush will deliver what is being billed as a major speech on the U.S. war in Iraq, justifying continued U.S. military presence there. The speech is a clear sign that the Bush administration is on the defensive, a reaction to mounting public and Congressional opposition to the war.

Before and during Bush's speech, anti-war activists including Iraq war veterans and military families will hold a vigil in Fayetteville, NC -- home of Ft. Bragg - to protest the continued war. If you are in driving distance of Fayetteville, we urge you to make the trip and join this important protest.

When Bush speaks on Tuesday, we can expect to hear the same thing he and others from his administration have been saying in recent days: their policies are working, things are getting better in Iraq, and no exit strategy is needed.

Bush lied before, and he is lying again. A growing majority of the people of this country know that Bush lied about the reasons to go to war, and all his efforts to portray the U.S. occupation as a success are nothing but empty spin. Even Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said yesterday that it could take at least 12 more years to stop the insurgency!! With more than 1700 U.S. soldiers and untold tens of thousands of Iraqis already dead after 2 1/2 years of this pointless nightmare, what could 12 more years possibly bring?

The anti-war movement has growing political momentum. Recent polls show that public opposition to the war is solid and growing. Near-daily reports of torture and other abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and other detention facilities have sparked widespread public outrage. The Downing Street memo has exposed and documented the lies of this administration. There is, at long last, some serious movement against the war in Congress: Just two weeks ago, 42 members of Congress formed the Out of Iraq Caucus, and before that, 128 members supported a resolution calling for an exit plan.

Even if you can't join the protest in Fayetteville, you can take action to help build on this political momentum. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper in response to Bush's speech. Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and urge your member of Congress to join the Out of Iraq Caucus - or leave a thank you message, if your representative has already joined.

And spread the word far and wide about the massive anti-war mobilization being planned in Washington, D.C. for the weekend of September 24-26. If we are to bring this illegal and immoral war to an end, we need to mobilize not just the folks who already have taken action against the war, but the vast numbers of normally apolitical people who are sickened by the carnage and want the troops brought home now. An array of new outreach leaflets have just been posted to the United for Peace and Justice website at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/fallmobe - download and copy them today, and start reaching out to folks in your community.

Not a day goes by without reports of senseless death and destruction while our communities are being bankrupted by the billions of dollars pouring into the war and occupation of Iraq. The Bush administration is on the political defensive, and it is time for us to re-double our efforts.

To strengthen the anti-war movement at this critical juncture, United for Peace and Justice needs your financial support. Please make the most generous donation you can today! Donate online, mail a check to the address below, or call us at 212-868-5545 to make a credit card donation by phone.

Since the speech will be on Fort Bragg, it will be interesting to see how many protesters will get through the gates with their signs and other stuff intact.

Sometimes these searches can get quite elaborate. Would not hurt to have the drug dogs at the gates too.

Given their attitude, I do not believe they will enjoy the experience. Talking back to an armed MP or DOD Civilian Guard is not a good idea.

I hope this is just the writer's interpretation, but what absolute idiot would get into such a war without having an exit strategy?

'Aid and Comfort' clause was remove when Clinton came into power, undoubtedly.
That's the best theory I have, thus treason was legalized.

We, in fact, do have an exit strategy. We're going to win the war, and then there will be no need for us to be there. Then we go home.

God, I hate hippies.

We thought the hippy subspecies would have died out long ago; a result of one too many acid trips. However, the hippy is apparently extremely resilient. Each new generation seems to spawn new hybrid forms. The hippy counterculture is spooky and will forever be a mystery to us. Peace.
Hippies. They're everywhere. They wanna save the earth, but all they do is smoke pot and smell bad.

I hate hippies! I mean, the way they always talk about "protectin' the earth" and then drive around in cars that get poor gas mileage and wear those stupid bracelets - I hate 'em! I wanna kick 'em in the nuts!

The strategy is and always has been to win. It seems to me we have a very clear strategy... the media is either blind or purposely ignores the fact that things are going very well for a war. This is probably one of the best run wars in history. Never have we accomplished so much, in so little time, with so little loss of US life.

Indeed. People actually think we are somehow going to fight this way and that there aren't going to be casualties. Sadly, it doesn't work that way.

Current Members of the "Out of Iraq Caucus":

Rep. Neil Abercrombie, Rep. Xavier Becerra, Rep. Corrine Brown, Rep. Julia Carson, Rep. Donna Christensen, Rep. John Conyers, Rep. William Delahunt, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, Rep. Sam Farr, Rep. Chaka Fattah, Rep. Raul Grijalva, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, Rep. Rush Holt, Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick, Rep. Dennis Kucinich, Rep. Barbara Lee, Rep. Shelia Jackson - Lee, Rep. John Lewis, Rep. James McGovern, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Rep. Jim Moran, Rep. Grace Napolitano, Rep. Eleanor Holmes-Norton, Rep. John Olver, Rep. Major Owens, Rep. Donald Payne, Rep. Nick Rahall, Rep. Charles Rangel, Rep. Janice Schakowsky, Rep. Bobby Scott, Rep. Jose Serrano, Rep. John Tierney

I'll call the capitol switchboard and denounce these seditious tools.
