The grieving dad of the 11-year-old mentally troubled New Jersey boy who suffocated in a car trunk with two younger pals blames the state's social-services agency, saying it should have put his son in a facility where he could have gotten help.
"If he would have been put in a safe place, this wouldn't have happened. The child needed a lot of help," Anibal Cruz Sr. said yesterday. -snip-" [The division] did nothing," Cruz said. "Why didn't they lock the baby somewhere safe? When kids need help, they have to help them."

I am not unaware nor insensitive to the horror that the parents experienced and I am sure that they will never find peace. I've had my share of loss and trouble but I would not want to trade with them even for a heartbeat.
Amazing that the parents of the 11 year old found time to meet with an attorney on Saturday.

Then you shouldn't have said what you did. Also, the mother went into the house for a few minutes and left the kids playing in the yard. I don't know of any parent that watches, hands on or eyes on to their kid 24/7. I know I didn't and I don't blame the mother for what happened, nor do I think it makes her a bad parent. Shit happens. Always has, always will. If we are going to go thru life assigning blame for every accident, then we are all going to be blamed for something eventually.
In the cases of accidental death of a child I know of, even tangentially, the parents were very, very hard on themselves and questioned their decisions. It was agonizing.
Heavy rainstorms that evening. People were probably inside. I don't think it took very long for 3 kids to suffocate in the trunk. Maybe a couple of hours.
My 99 Camry does NOT have the safety release in the trunk, so I'm sure a 92 wouldn't.
No, the 11 year-old had 'development problems', whatever that means. We know he was playing with very much younger kids and that this wasn't unusual for him. Cars are magnets for boys of all ages, you'd think that would have been one of the first places they'd have checked. The troubling question is why nobody opened that trunk (experienced cops),once they realized the kids were actually missing. I guess it was so frantic, everybody panicking and the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. Still.
I have to wonder about how the father was questioned by the reporter to illicit a statement like this. Maybe we should start calling it reporter Phishing or media Phishing.
Oh dear, your post sounds like things are even worse than at first glance, and if I were that dad, I'd be screaming bloody murder and God knows what else at SS. If his ex has suddenly disappeared from public view, you know why.
The woman says "for a few minutes." How can that be proved? Maybe it was a few minutes. Maybe if was 40 minutes.
I have six children and I watch them like a hawk. None of my children is allowed outside alone. Period. An older child must accompany a younger child outside. Certain places are off limits. I would NEVER in ALL MY YEARS AS A MOTHER thought about leaving 5 year olds outside alone for 4 seconds, let alone 4 minutes (if such is the case). I include in this the poor 11-year olf boy who was supposedly "retarded" and had a mentality of a 5-year old. (Maybe he just acted like a 5-year old but I don't know). The woman left the equivalent of three 5-year old boys alone outside in Camden New Jersey, for a few minutes or many minutes. It matters not.
I am sorry but that is a bad parent.
Yes Virginia, there is a way to be a mother, and it means BEING THERE.
I'm so sorry about the death of your son. A lawsuit by the father of this dead child in Camden is the only way he can hold the SS feet to the fire and perhaps prevent another tragedy from happening. Sadly, sometimes social agencies only pay attention when it costs them in court.
This wretched story is all too common, and it makes you wonder what in the world is happening to this country.
