The grieving dad of the 11-year-old mentally troubled New Jersey boy who suffocated in a car trunk with two younger pals blames the state's social-services agency, saying it should have put his son in a facility where he could have gotten help.
"If he would have been put in a safe place, this wouldn't have happened. The child needed a lot of help," Anibal Cruz Sr. said yesterday. -snip-" [The division] did nothing," Cruz said. "Why didn't they lock the baby somewhere safe? When kids need help, they have to help them."

I made no comment about the actions of the parents. My only objection is to the demeaning of the older boy based on nothing but imagination and prejudice. In my society speaking ill of the dead is considered less than civil, even if one speaks the truth. To speak ill of the dead without substantiation is down right low. If the dead person is a child the the word despicable enters the conversation.

It is when he can't obtain custody and DCFS won't help him. You wouldn't be so glib if you knew your child wasn't being watched like you knew they needed to be and could do nothing about it.
I blame the caretakers--who was watching these kids? I mean, a five year old? I don't even let my 8 year old out in the front yard unless I'm watching, and I live in a nice neighborhood!
Of course. The state of New Jersey better be prepared to pay some big bucks. Fox showing that female detective walking around the car, looking under it but NOT opening the trunk will be exhibit number 1. Doesn't matter that the poor little boys were probably already dead.....that if the mom that was supposed to be watching them had started looking for them right away, perhaps she would have heard their cries for help and banging from inside the trunk...nope. It's the states fault and bringing in Family Services just is more $$$$$ for the settlement to come. IMO
The parents should have watched their kids - imagine leaving kids that young unsupervised in a high crime area after all the media stories about sex offenders targeting kids.
And subsequently, a law was passed that required anyone disposing of a refrigerator to either remove (or otherwise secure) the door. I wonder if that law would be applicable in this case?

Someone left a stolen car in front of my house (motor running) and the *first* thing I did (after 911) was go knock on the trunk to see if anyone was inside.
He may have been a brat too, but typically, 11 year old kids don't hang out with 5 and 6 year olds. That's a sign something was wrong with him.
Unless the car itself was unlocked, and it had one of those trunk opening buttons in the glove compartment. Kids might have been playing in the car and discovered the button.
My Camry has a trunk release down by the drivers seat. Mine is a 1999 and one of my sons still drives a 1992 model! Over 200,000 miles and still going. Anyway, it also has the trunk release by the drivers seat.
That is possible but I have only seen that button on newer models. I bought a new Buick last summer with that and have to remind myself to keep it locked since all it would take would be a smashed window to open the trunk.
How ironic to watch the deputy walk around the car knowing that the kids were in the trunk. And disturbing.
That's what I thought too, the parents are nuts letting 5 year olds play with an 11 year old. Methinks this isn't the first time the 11 year old pulled a caper with younger kids. That kid was on a collision course.

I agree. I can't imagine why no one heard the kids inside the trunk. Did the kids not yell or kick at the lid trying to get out? I just don't get it.
Seems like I read the trunk had malfunctioned. I believe trunks are designed to be opened from the inside.
The sad thing is that in our quest to create a risk-free world (the goal of every liberal) we are going to have to lock up our kids in rubber rooms 24 hours a day.
I can remember going outside and roaming the woods from sunup to sundown in the summer. Kids can't do that anymore. Partly because we allow pedophiles to exist, but also because we no longer allow for the possibility of accidents.
Even on this conservative board, as soon as anyone dies accidently, the assumption is that someone is to blame and must be punished.

They had probably fallen asleep or suffocated prior to that. Though it is surprizing that a trunk would be that airtight.
