What are the current-draw characteristics of the new battery? Speed must be provided with higher current, IMO, and could conceivably exceed average wiring installation capabilities.

Just curious.

The problem with the conversion is that it may dramatically reduce the battery life. And the batteries are expensive ($3,000 - $4,900).

From batteryuniversity.com:

The cycle life of sealed lead-acid is directly related to the depth of discharge. The typical number of discharge/charge cycles at 25°C (77°F) with respect to the depth of discharge is:

The lead-acid battery should not be discharged beyond 1.75V per cell, nor should it be stored in a discharged state. The cells of a discharged lead-acid sulfate, a condition that renders the battery useless if left in that state for a few days. Always keep the open terminal voltage at 2.10V and higher.

What the modification necessarily does is to stop the engine from turning on to recharge the battery until the battery is more drained than it would be in the original hybrid design. As long as you don't let the battery discharge more than 10% or so, it will last a long time.

The bottom line is that any gas savings would be offset by the cost of replacing a $3-$4K set of batteries on a frequent basis

You've got to be a bit careful in the assumptions here.
diesel electric and hybrid cars both still use combustion engines to turn fossil fuel energy into motive power in the overall system.

What the hybrid and diesel-electric change vs traditional combustion is then converting the motive power into electricy and then driving a generator.

This has two effects:
- electric motors have ability to be efficient across much wider speed ranges, so you save yourself from gearing and transmission loss (think 5 speed transmission vs electric motor drive).
- because the combustion engine doesnt have to be driving the car directly, it can be run in more controlled RPM and troque for max efficiency.

But you still have the internal combustion in the chain of power, which is at best 40%-45% efficient.

Okay one more post before I leave for the gun show! The army has a hybrid Humvee that works offroad or it's in the development stages. Toyota brags it's entire line, including Land CRUSHER and Sequoia will be hybridized by 2008. IF it proved to be up to 4x4 challenges, I'd get one in a hearbeat. As it is, the next logical step that's coming for most of the monster full sized 4x4's like Suburban and H2 and H3 is diesel using the ultra efficient and powerful european versions. A diesel 1996 (last year they were made) Suburban gets 20mpg+ that's about Miami to DC on one tank of fuel.

I actually build 12v l-i (saphion) batteries Toyota's looking to integrate into the Prius and wish I could convert my F250 to u-charge.

I live over here and I long to be able to drive an SUV without taking out a second mortgage to fill up. As you probably know if you have ever been stationed here, the Germans would like nothing better than to don a cowboy hat and cruise route 66 - yeah they are all affected by the show.

Their diesels are great, I got a VW. I went to the local Honda dealer and asked about a hybrid. Obviously, he couldn't move it because he offered to change the seats to leather and sacrifice his first born. Tempting as it was, I declined.

I live in a state replete with "cowboys" and I think I would get made fun of if I strolled up to the honky tonk rollin' in this:

Call me a skeptic, but that thing looks gayer than Freddie Mercury walking through the Castro. That and I would surmise it would be tough to strap a deer on top of that thing.

But that's just me...

In any event, you still need to generate power via electricity, which is currently in the form of natural gas etc. If the entire nation moves to electric or electric-hybrid and cut oil consumption dramatically, we'll need to convert to nuclear energy.

I like what Honda, Ford and Lexus has done. Their hybrids look like something out of their regular lineup. Since Lexus is a Toyota, I guess Lexus owners are lucky they didn't make their hybrids butt-ugly, too.

Ampere's law has H dropping by the square of R for non-time varying fields. For time dependent magnetic fields there is an R squared and an R term, but no cubic term. How do you get the cube term?

From my understanding the current in the car is on the order of welding currents which has an adverse effect on ICDs.

I have a couple of "mesh culverts" (aka "stents") in my cardiac arteries -- but it would take one whomping BIG EMP to induce any damaging energy in them,
