White House Defends Rove 9/11 Remarks After Dems Demand Apology
AP ^ | June 23, 2005 | Bryce Mursch

Posted on 06/23/2005 11:07:26 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

The White House is rejecting Democratic demands that Karl Rove apologize for saying liberals meekly offered "therapy" for the terrorists as a response to 9/11.

Press Secretary Scott McClellan says President Bush's top political adviser was just "telling it like it is." Rove delivered his blast a few miles from Ground Zero in New York, at a Conservative Party dinner, he said liberals sought "understanding" for the attack and Democrats called for "moderation and restraint" while President Bush saw it for what it was: a declaration of war.

McClellan says Rove wasn't getting personal, just describing different philosophies.

Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean calls Rove's remarks "divisive and damaging." Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid says Rove should apologize, or resign.

At a Senate hearing on Iraq, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton called on military leaders to "immediately repudiate" what she called "an insulting comment."

additionally Kerry was quoted as saying that much of our response to terrorism should be as a criminal matter.

And that the terrorist threat is "overrated"

The guy who wrote that is from the left. Aaronovitch used to be a communist (in the Young Communists, to be exact), but moved more moderate over the years. He wrote the piece immediately after Sept. 11, and a few others, pushing for "understanding" and relatively non-violent resolve (he said picking off the perpetrators was ok, but an all-out assault on terrorism would be bad). He's since moved further right, and was an avid supporter of the war in Iraq, and still is, as far as I know.

Anyway, point is, he used to be a leftist, he wrote that piece promoting tolerance and understanding but not retaliation, and has since revised his views on the WOT. So basically, his opinions early on supported what Rove said.

If we're talking unelected liberals, the list is in the thousands if not millions.

This is a slam dunk. Rove says "liberals", Democrats howl, and now you just follow up with any number of relevant comments from the moveon.org, dummieunderground, airhead america types that completely back up what Rove said and tie 'mainstream' dems to these crackpots. The guy is f'ing brilliant.

>> I thought Hillary was moderate, not liberal! I think she has just been tripped and fallen on her face running to the center! >>

Exactly! And now Karl should follow up and point that out.

Hannity just played some great sound-bites of prominent Democrats that proved Rove's point. Made within weeks of 9/11.

Names, please. Somebody on this thread was asking for them.

I love Dubya and Rove. True American patriots who will back our troops to the hilt, and fight our enemies -- both foreign and domestic. Kudos

Yep, those are their first instincts

GOD BLESS Karl Rove for saying it as it is! Turban Durban comes out on the Senate floor and says those most horrible things and Dean is all over the place on his accusations and they get offended over the speaking of the truth. They are over the top!

Sen. Clinton hits governor on White House aide's Sept. 11 comments

By DEVLIN BARRETT Associated Press Writer

June 23, 2005, 2:37 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday tried to draw Gov. George Pataki into the debate over recent remarks by White House advisor Karl Rove about liberals' reaction to Sept. 11.

Clinton, D-N.Y., joined Senate Democrats who called on Rove to apologize or resign for his comments Wednesday night in Manhattan to the New York state Conservative Party.

The senator said Pataki was at the event, and should speak out against Rove's characterization.

President Bush's chief political advisor said liberals "saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."

Conservatives, said President Bush's chief political adviser, "saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."

Clinton said such comments don't reflect the unity among New Yorkers and Americans of all political stripes after the terror attacks of 2001.

"I would also call on Gov. Pataki to repudiate these comments. He was at that dinner last night," said Clinton.

"I would call on anyone who was at that dinner who is a New Yorker who cares about the unity of not only New York City but of our country to say we may have disagreements about what the best way is to win the war against terror, but we have no disagreements about our unity and our resolve and the goals we seek."
