The Iraqi government has announced that it has arrested two senior members of Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi's al-Qaeda in Iraq operating in the northern city of Mosul.
The government said the two men were arrested on June 19 and were candidates to replace al-Qaeda's leader in Mosul who had been captured on June 14. They two men were identified as Salim Mohammed Ahmed, also known as Abu Nabhan, and Mohammed Thaer Ibrahim, also known as Abu Sarhan.
"The two terrorists surrendered without resistance," the announcement said.
It offered no other details about the arrests other than to say they were the result of a tip.
US forces last week had announced the arrest of Mohammed Khalaf, also known as Abu Talha, who was identified al-Qaeda's leader in Mosul. At the time, the US military described his capture as a major defeat for the terrorist group.
"The two terrorists were candidates to fill Abu Talha's post," the government announcement said.
The government claimed the two men were responsible for numerous killings, bombings and kidnappings in Mosul. It said they also were involved with organised crime, including stolen cars and narcotics, to finance their "terrorist operations".
"The arrest of Abu Talha, al-Mula Mehdi, Abu Ali and Haji Ibrahim is proof of the ability of the security forces to eliminate the leading figures of al-Qaeda in Mosul," the announcement said.
Can't be true. The democrats told us Al-Qaeda was never operating in iraq.
Ah, er...um... well NOW... :-)
You mean to tell me Zarqawi wasn't in Iraq before the war?
This morning they took down some General and his son who were out on the street planting IEDs. LOL, they can't even find people to go do their dirty work for them anymore, they're stuck doing it themselves.
Rolling up the Mosul network..
it's a question of whether al queda and the u.s. media will wear down public opinion before the job's finished, or whether the president's agenda succeeds.
Great! Now that we've arrested them, we torture them for info, and THEN when they are no longer of any use, BEHEAD THEM! Like they would do to us.
Ever notice that the bigger "fish" give it up like a Frenchman.
"The coward wretch whose hand and heart Can bear to torture aught below, Is ever first to quail and start From the slightest pain or equal foe."
Bertrand Russell
W does'nt give a damm what the media or AQ want. What makes him a great President is his ability to actually stick to something he believes is right, even when he takes heat for it.
He has a little more than three years left to get the job done. Had he lost the last election, we would already have lost in Iraq by now.
His win was very bad news for the killers and thugs in Iraq.
Now, if the dems and the media could just get the same memo.........
"It's a joke, son, a joke.", Foghorn Leghorn
Re" General and Capt.(son) planting IEDS. The same thought struck me. Since when do officers in Arab nations do the dirty work?
This cell, at least, is scraping the bottom of the manpower barrel. Good work, GIs, keep after them!
Does anybody know the significance of "ABU" in all their AKAs?
i agree with your accessment of the president.
but if aq and the u.s. media turn the majority of americans against the war, it will affect his presidency.
the media did that successfully with the vietnam war.
You forgot to mention one more:
and the TREASONOUS national-level DEMOCRATS!
[ahem] Excuse my shouting, but I feel better now.
glad you feel betta.
um, it goes without saying that the american mainstream media is democrat.
