Bush Wants a New Effort for Bolton in the Senate
NYT ^ | July 22, 2005 | SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and RICHARD W. STEVENSON

President Bush on Tuesday pressed Senate Republican leaders to continue fighting to confirm John R. Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations, even though Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, said his options had been exhausted and some Republicans urged the appointment of Mr. Bolton when Congress recesses.

"The president made it very clear that he expects an up-or-down vote," Dr. Frist told reporters after meeting with the president. Back in the Capitol, he added, "I don't want to close that door yet."

Earlier in the day, Dr. Frist suggested the door had been closed, telling reporters that "me bringing up a vote is not going to change anything."

Mr. Voinovich, who threw the Bolton nomination into turmoil by opposing it, said Mr. Bush should simply nominate someone else. He said he had several candidates in mind, but would not identify them.

Voinovich helps Dems block Bolton vote

Sen. George Voinovich said President Bush's choice for U.N. ambassador, John Bolton, "is not the right man for this job."

Sen. George Voinovich of Ohio was the only Republican to side with Democrats on Monday, voting to prevent President Bush's choice for United Nations ambassador from getting a confirmation vote.

One thing is very clear......

The Democrats are cowards.

They are afraid of President Bush.

They are afraid of the terrorists.

They are terrified of Hillary Clinton, who has copies of all their FBI files.

This whole situation is a joke! We have the minority in this country running every branch of our government. The majority ie republicans are impotent and deer caught in headlights...their refusal to confirm judges, censure Derbin, save Schiavo, pass tough laws to honor Jessica Lunsford, failure to promote social security, inaction on our borders....all of this disgusts me. The republicans have failed the voters....they can't even confirm Bolton.

Ditto, what we should do is not to support the "problematic" senators which include McCain, and other RINOs. With the Democrats, we know that they are our opposition. With RINOs, they "claim" to be on our team while they stab us in the back.

Frist shouldn't have opened his big mouth and announce surrender to the Dems.

There shouldn't have been a need for Bush to set them straight.

What a bunch of wusses the Republican Senators, including the leaderhip turned out to be...

Your logic is flawed. If you cannot figure it out then you have no idea how the Senate works.

We need 60 votes to succeed in a cloture vote. We don't have 60 Republicans to make the Senate filibuster proof. Obviously you don't remember the days when Republicans stalled the Senate as a minority but then they had to talk for hours and hours. Senator Dirksen was a master.

Some of you people expect miracles from the Senate leadership and it is not going to happen. Getting all but one Republican to stick together is a major accomplishment when you have McCain on your side. Maybe you would like to explain to Senator Frist how he can break this stall of the Democrats when he doesn't have 60 votes. Before attacking, you should check facts.

I know exactly how the Senate works. I know my facts, so don't start lecturing me. The dumocraps have taken those RULES and twisted them to their favor. Nothing is getting done and the repubs refuse to play hardball. You know this.

"Maybe you would like to explain to Senator Frist how he can break this stall of the Democrats when he doesn't have 60 votes. "

Change the rules. It doesn't take 60 Senators to change the rules about cloture.

The Dems would do it in a heartbeat.

Bill Frist doesn't have a woodshed. If he did, he would have taken himself to it a while back. Frist is just another inept a-hole Republican Senator.

What a group - McCain, Voinovich, Frist, Chafee, Specter, the Maine twins, Hagel - I could go on and on but it is far too depressing.
