Islamic Group Calls for Use of Koran to Take Oath

An Islamic civil rights and advocacy group is calling on North Carolina judges to allow people to use the Koran when taking an oath, saying the use of the Bible exclusively represents "an inappropriate state endorsement of religion."

The request by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) comes after Guilford County judges said they would not allow use of Korans in their courtrooms.

"An oath of the Quran is not a lawful oath under our law," said W. Douglas Albright, Guilford's senior resident Superior Court judge. According to state law, swearing an oath constitutes putting one's hand on the "Holy Scriptures."

Those who do not wish to take an oath using the Bible may make an "affirmation."

"By stating that only one book qualifies as 'Holy Scriptures,' the court may be making an inappropriate endorsement of a single set of religious beliefs," said CAIR Legal Director Arsalan Iftikhar.

"Eliminating the opportunity to swear an oath on one's own holy text may also have the effect of diminishing the credibility of that person's testimony," Iftikhar added.

North Carolina's Administrative Office of the Courts last week issued a preliminary opinion saying that state law allows people to be sworn in using a Koran rather than a Bible, CAIR noted.

According to Iftikhar, CAIR will offer a free copy of the Koran to any judge in North Carolina or nationwide for use in oaths or "for personal awareness of the holy text."

The Koran is a lie, so use it for all liars to swear on.

makes sense to me to have a muslim swear the quaran, having them swear on the Bible does not instill me with as much hope oof their being truthful than the use of the quoran. In fact we should extend this to other faiths

Jewish - sweart on the Torah
Mormon - Book of Mormon
Hindu - Bahgvad Gita
Atheist - The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell (?)
etc.
etc.

You're right. That piece of trash does tell them they can lie.

Of course they don't need an excuse to lie. It comes as second nature.

Muslims can swear on a Koran or on a Bible or on their mother's grave, it doesn't make a difference. They will lie anyway.

Because in their "holy book" it is permissible to lie to the infidel.

The Islamo-facsists are learning from the fringe left to use our freedoms to destroy us.

Muslims are counting on "fair and tolerant" people like you to achieve victory.

I think that's where we'll end up. Using different books for everyone.

And what about atheists?

If you can use the Bible, you should be allowed to use whatever holy book you desire.

If it's the law, then it's not really up to the judges to decide. Oh, nevermind...

I'm a little surprised we haven't had these complaints before. The article points out the "affirmation" exemption, but I suppose I can appreciate the islamists argument. Regardless, right or wrong, my indifference toward Islam turned to bitterness after 9/11.

Hey Reilly. You have the right answer. I won't go near a mosque; I have no known Moslem friends; I sometimes curse Islam; but if this is their assurance of telling the truth (if that is possible), then it is the way to go. I suspect it is already permissible most places to affirm the telling of truth without swearing and without the left hand resting on a book. An alternative book seems a logical extension of that practice.
