Islamic Group Calls for Use of Koran to Take Oath

An Islamic civil rights and advocacy group is calling on North Carolina judges to allow people to use the Koran when taking an oath, saying the use of the Bible exclusively represents "an inappropriate state endorsement of religion."

The request by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) comes after Guilford County judges said they would not allow use of Korans in their courtrooms.

"An oath of the Quran is not a lawful oath under our law," said W. Douglas Albright, Guilford's senior resident Superior Court judge. According to state law, swearing an oath constitutes putting one's hand on the "Holy Scriptures."

Those who do not wish to take an oath using the Bible may make an "affirmation."

"By stating that only one book qualifies as 'Holy Scriptures,' the court may be making an inappropriate endorsement of a single set of religious beliefs," said CAIR Legal Director Arsalan Iftikhar.

"Eliminating the opportunity to swear an oath on one's own holy text may also have the effect of diminishing the credibility of that person's testimony," Iftikhar added.

North Carolina's Administrative Office of the Courts last week issued a preliminary opinion saying that state law allows people to be sworn in using a Koran rather than a Bible, CAIR noted.

According to Iftikhar, CAIR will offer a free copy of the Koran to any judge in North Carolina or nationwide for use in oaths or "for personal awareness of the holy text."

Let's go back to the old way.

Roman soldiers swore their oaths by placing their hand on their testicles (it's where the word 'testimony' came from). If he lied, he'd lose 'em.

The side effect was that a woman's statements were not acceptable in a court, as she couldn't actually give 'testimony'. This isn't any worse than sharia law, I suppose...

Jews traditionally either flip to the end of the "Old Testement" and swear only on that portion of the Bible, or bring their own Bible with them to Court (often in Hebrew).

This is America. We have sacred traditions. We spilled blood over them. To Hell with the death cult and their "special laws."

"hy haven't there been any new terrorist attacks? They don't need to, they have something on their side even more lethal than a WMD ... The American Civil Liberties Union {{spit}} and their team of lawyers.

We came so close to electing Kerry and if that had happened we would have been on the Highway to Bhurka-ville.

If, in 2008, we elect Hildabeast ... stick a fork in us, we are done."

there is NO such thing as a former marine.

What the hell is wrong with you?
My uncle nearly tore my f'in head off thirty years ago for saying that.

He was an iwo jima marine... plus several other pacific islands.

Once a marine always a marine. It's active or inactive. Period. And anything less will generally get your ass kicked... They consider the oath a lifetime oath... as a marine.

He said the marines were not THE ARMY, OR THE AIR CORPS.

I NEVER said it again.
Always faithful means ALWAYS... to the old marines. I suspect that nothing has changed.

I've never met a marine, inactive or active, that would take it differently. And I have asked.

Perhaps since gitmo and the panties on the heads crapola, the marine corps have changed. I doubt it.

If the Islam pigs can't bomb us into submitting to their cult. They will find other ways to destroy our culture and country. Beware the Anti-Christ is near.

I don't see what the big deal is. If they're Muslim, why do we care if they swear on the Koran? It's their Holy Book; there's no reason for them to swear on the Bible. I don't see why this is such a big deal.

Atheist don't swear on the Bible, they promise to tell the truth. Islam can do the same thing.

What the heck do you call Marines who are no longer in the service?

By their rank, son. By their rank. As in, "Leuitenant Jones, formerly of the United States Marine Corps".

makes sense to me to have a muslim swear the quaran

Makes more sense to me to avoid at all costs getting involved with these slime bags in any way that could lead to them having to 'swear an oath'. Any of them 'swearing an oath' is fundamentally an oxymoron by a moron.
