Growing my own tobacco -I've had it with these prices! (A journal)

Since I have to get to bed, I'm just going to paste what I placed into the coffinnails.com forum. There's relevant questions inclused that I'll place on this thread if they get answered.
Day one -finally got my seeds!
Them things are SMALL! Sheesh! I had to fuzzy up the end of a Q-Tip to place them into the trays. Before I screw things up, there's a few questions I must ask. The 200 seeds I got are Dark Virginia. I'm doing 16 at a time.
Will the unused seeds keep for a while? I'd like to grow 'em in staggered stages. Will regular tap water work, or will I have to use distilled or rainwater? I have to used that kind for my Venus's Flytraps. Flourescent lighting. Will it work well for staggered stage growing year-round? Humidity? Someone told me that nicotine is a natural insect repellant. Is this true? Has anyone here saved the $$$ they expected to save? That's why I'm doing this. What's the best soil to use?
Luckily, there's a big place near my home called Paulino's Gardens, where I can find almost all the accessories I need for this venture of mine. I'll update on this thread as I go along.
OH! First entry: Got seeds three days ago and placed them on top of potting soil in 16-cube icetray container with holes in the bottom. Placed trays in my carnivorous plant terrarium that uses three 15-watt flourescent bulbs on a 18-hour timer. Sprayed and soaked with rainwater. Crossing my fingers.
Last question for the day: How long should it be before something actually grows?

Don't forget the additives or you'll be smoking harsh city.
Asian deer tongue extract, concentrated essence of camel dung, and dried ground ferret musk glands are good for starters.

Heard of this. I believe we are discussing different types of tobacco. For instance from hill country NC to Kentucky one sees Burley tobacco, typically very small plots, 5 to 20 acres. When harvested, it is often still cured in the open field, leaves lovingly wrapped into conical piles about four feet high, each supported by a stake in the middle. Nearly exclusively pipe tobacco, totally different flavor from cigarette tobacco. The flue cured tobacco I worked with accounts for nearly all the American cigarette stuffing. Other varieties are grown more expensively and in different climates for pipe, cigar and "smokeless" as they now call chawbacca.

It's truly sad how ignorant a lot of kids are about common-place things. It absolutely drives me insane.....I grew up in the city (NYC to be exact) and I knew how to grow things, my mother taught me how to sew, and out of necessity I even learned how to cook (mom was a bit week in that area)
Good for you for teaching your girls to sew. Mine has figured out how to thread the bobbin on the sewing machine and started begging me to teach her to crochet when she was about 4.
I think a lot of the problem with these kids not knowing anything, is their parents don't do any of these mundane day to day things - they buy it or pay someone else to do it. I'm too cheap - if I can make it or grow it cheaper than buying it, I will :)

"Green tobacco Pickers Syndrome" can make you intensely ill.
Skin and clothing act as a big nicotine sink. You get dermal absorption. (it's the reason that nicotine patches work)
Besides wearing long sleeves and long pants. Shower as soon as you come away from working with tobacco plants.
Green Tobacco Pickers Syndrome will make you puke your toenails out but it can also cause slow heart rate and a drop in blood pressure.

You can also buy tobacco already cured in bulk.
I wish I had done that when I smoked, would have been cheaper, been better cigarettes, and I could smoke here and there instead of a pack.

The mere ability for the crop to be part of a economic transaction, or to be passed across state lines, is all the justification needed for the federal government to make the growing, packaging, transferring, gifting, selling, transporting of a crop illeagl in the US today. Yep, you're right. I hope the T-men don't take an untoward interest in my capsicum garden...

I confess, Gabz, I snagged that pic off the web. It's not mine.
However, I do have about 25x25 feet in various hot peppers, and probably a half-peck of cayennes could be picked now. I'm in North Carolina, on the east end where the growing season is long.
I'm growing them through black plastic sheeting. I hate to pull weeds in Rocky Mount in July...

LOL!!! snagging pix is fun!
I'm practically due north of you on rte 13 in VA near the MD line! We've got a pretty long season here as well.
I'm using a black mesh/fabric type stuff instead of plastic this year. I've got about 4,500 square feet tilled once - then the tiller croaked.......so only about half of it is currently being used in 10x3 blocks. I'm really running behind this year - I only have about 45 hot peppers of different varieties so far. I'm hoping to have enough viable seedlings to get at least that many more in next week and again in another 2 weeks.
I keep an eye on the commercial tomato grower fields on the back road, and add both peppers and tomatoes when they put in their next batch of plants ..... it's a good indicator and I then have the successive crops.

I'm trying to grow chiltepins this year. So far the plants are looking weak. My anchos are huge plants already, with big thick stems...but the chiltepins aren't getting any more than six inches tall.
Not sure what's up with that; of course, I never tried growing them before, either, and they're pretty badly out of their natural range.

At least I've never seen anyone act like paranoid schizophrenic on opium or their derivatives.
They just steal everything YOU own to support their habits.
As someone who was on long term opiates for some serious chronic pain, I can tell you it's no picnic and even then it doesn't eliminate all the pain, plus the added pleaseure of being addicted even though when it's prescribed to you, they don't use the word addicted although I forget the term they do use.
