Deception's damning documents -Downing Memos Still Exist!
Boston Globe ^ | 6/21/05 | Paul Rogat Loeb

Posted on 06/21/2005 8:23:16 AM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

IT'S BAD enough that the Bush administration had so little international support for the Iraqi war that its ''coalition of the willing" meant the United States, Britain, and the equivalent of a child's imaginary friends. It's even worse that, as the British Downing Street memo confirms, they had so little evidence of real threats that they knew from the start that they were going to have to manufacture excuses to go to war. What's more damning still is that they effectively began this war even before the congressional vote.

With congressman John Conyers holding hearings, the media are finally starting to cover the Downing Street memo. This transcript of a July 23, 2002, British prime minister's meeting, whose legitimacy the British government confirms, details their response to the Bush administration's intention to go to war against Iraq, no matter how Saddam Hussein responded, and even while claiming they were still seeking peaceful solutions.

''It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided," states the document. ''But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea, or Iran." As the document states, ''the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy." The document is damning, particularly coupled with the testimony of former Bush ghost-writer Mickey Herskowitz that Bush was talking about invading Iraq as early as 1999. But it's even more disturbing as we start learning that this administration began actively fighting the Iraq war well in advance of the March 2003 official attack--before both the October 2002 US congressional authorization and the November United Nations resolution requiring that Saddam Hussein open the country up to inspectors...

fake but accurate

The left (the boston "GLOB") is petrified the memos are fake story will gain legs BEFORE the hearings end.

Once they have their "dubin" moment, it does not matter if the documents are shown as fake. Al jazeera will have their propaganda.

The fact that the Boston Globe refuses to accept or do any investigation into the validity of the docs is BEYOND disgusting, BEYOND YELLOW JOURNALISM, is is borderline treason.

Perhaps the reporter needs a vacation at Club Gitmo.

Ok... so despite the fact that there's 1) no way to verify the memos are legit, and 2) nothing really damning in them anyway, this Boston Globe idiot still thinks they're relevant?

Hey Loeb, your "damning documents" are fake.

This transcript of a July 23, 2002, British prime minister's meeting...

No, it's not a transcript of the meeting, it's what British reporter Michael Smith CLAIMS are a transcript of the meeting. He re-typed the minutes and destroyed the original minutes claiming he was protecting the source.

"coalition of the willing" meant the United States, Britain, and the equivalent of a child's imaginary friends.

Please tell that to the soldiers from other countries who incurred "imaginary" deaths and injuries.

If this twit was paying attention rather than grinding his political axe, he'd realize that the UK and UK continued to bomb Iraq fairly heavily throughout the 1990s (while a certain favored Democrat was president) to damage it's ability to defend itself against air attacks. Why no complaints about what Clinton and Blair did throughout the 1990s rather than just the focus on Bush and Blair (let's not forget him)?

"I follow Iraq pretty closely, but was taken aback when Charlie Clements, now head of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, described driving in Iraq months before the war ''and a building would just explode, hit by a missile from 30,000 feet."

WTF? Would someone please google the "Unitarian Universalist whatever"? I have a feeling Charlie Clements may be a Nut.

I find it remarkable that everything this political document talks about, I have heard for a decade!

The US and Britain have been hashing over this quandary since Saddam decided not to live up to his surrender agreement to prove on paper that he destroyed his WMD.

Do we trust Saddam and Sons to not make and use WMD in the future, after the so-called "containment" was lifted? Or do we just take him out, (regime change under Clinton), or do we use the UN, ie, the failure to disclose WMD destruction or whereabouts?

But, for most liberals history begins when they wake up in the morning.

"With congressman John Conyers holding hearings..."

Bugus hearings (on bogus documents) "chaired" by the biggest socialist in congress. "Curiouser and curiouser," said Alice.

Speaking of which, have you noticed just how quiet Kerry got after his big June 2nd announcement where he was going to raise this with Congress, blah blah blah.

Just like Dean running his mouth, I want liberals everywhere to just keep on wasting their time, money & energy chasing ghosts & ghostwriters. As far as political enemies go, these people may be numerous but they're just not very bright.

I don't think the information is fake. I saw the journalist and he said it was the legal folks who instructed on all that stuff.

The real issue is that the information shows concern about the use of WMDs.

That's the loudest message in it I hear. Everything else is just about the theory on what might lead to a conflict.

Good grief. All the evidence presented to President Bush was handed down by slick willie and his hand picked FBI and CIA heads.
