Eleanor Mondale Diagnosed With Cancer

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eleanor Mondale, the daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale, has been diagnosed with brain cancer, the Star Tribune reported Tuesday.

Mondale spoke to the newspaper just hours before she began her first session of radiation and chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Just a week ago, Mondale married local rock star Chan Poling.

"It's bad but not that bad," she said from her farmhouse in Prior Lake. "I've got a really good chance to beat it."

Mondale, 45, said her vision had bothered her in recent months but didn't believe there was anything seriously wrong until a camping trip May 16, when she suffered two seizures.

Doctors determined she had two tumors, both in her frontal lobe, and on May 31 they were found to be cancerous.

Mondale will undergo nearly seven weeks of oral chemotherapy and radiation, which could either zap the tumors completely or reduce them to a size that makes surgery safer.

This is not good news for her. I had a friend who seemed perfectly healthy, had a seizure on the way back from a picnic, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was dead a few months later. It was a terrible shock to everyone. Prayers for the poor woman.

My sister inlaw was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few month back also

The lastest batch of tests don't look good and we are waiting for a 2nd set of test can be run to see of she is getting any better ot worse

I am really sorry to hear that, Mo. I am still pretty undone over Kim's death. She had a husband and two young children and it was devastating.

She seems optimistic about her chances.

It's a brave face. Depending on the type of cancer she has a 35% chance of surviving for two more years, and as low as an 8% chance.

This is tragic news. She undoubtedly was not a conservative, but that's not even the issue. She is young and apparently was just getting on with her life.

The most common form of brain cancer has a five year survival rate of under 3%. At a minimum, your life is going to be hell trying to beat it.

And nothing you did before the diagnosis was the cause for it. It's just horrible.
