What just happened in sky over Los Angeles?
finny

Posted on 06/19/2005 8:27:21 PM PDT by Finny

About ten minutes ago, Husband in hills behind Brea, between Brea and Chino Hills, spotted in the northwest what looked like something entering the atmosphere. We grabbed binoculars, and it was extremely high altitude, coming in, not going out. Anybody see it? Can probably still spot it further north, as in Pasadena, etc. Grab binocs and look.

Not really, the atmosphere is pretty loosely defined. it has no real edge, only a practical limit. The shuttle and space station are still subject to aerodynamic drag as is everything in LEO.

Terra Firma..now that has a definite boundary.

I honestly didn't realize "atmosphere" was that damn complicated. chalk up another "learn something new every day" for FR

I've seen meteors split up and break up going through the atmosphere. There was a really bright one over Chicago a couple years back during the early evening that stopped traffic.

I'm glad that this event is important enough to start a thread, but not important enough to miss dinner.

Tell me, oh-holier-than-anyone-else obviously not-yet-recovered hermit, if the person who cooks dinner for your family suddenly opted out and left you hanging dinnerless (actually, with dinner burning on the stove) because it was more important to reply on-the-spot to FR posts (including brilliant ones like yours) as opposed to taking a freaking 15 minute break, would you think that a PLUS? Also: thanks so much for your valuable insight on the topic at hand -- your comment has truly enriched the whole discussion. NOT.

C'mon Finny...I was just goofing with you!

I suppose I'm just jealous because nothing this intriguing ever happens here in Michigan.

Don't you know the rules? If you start a thread, you must remain online for a minimum of 8 hours so that you can be on hand to immediately respond to all replies.

You dinner is just going to have to wait. Sorry but them's the rules.

Sorry for that post - upon further review it kind of looks like bragging. As it turns out G-d decided to send us some nasty weather shutting down our beach trip. Consider me properly chastized.
