What just happened in sky over Los Angeles?

About ten minutes ago, Husband in hills behind Brea, between Brea and Chino Hills, spotted in the northwest what looked like something entering the atmosphere. We grabbed binoculars, and it was extremely high altitude, coming in, not going out. Anybody see it? Can probably still spot it further north, as in Pasadena, etc. Grab binocs and look.

No contrail. What we saw was a forked shape, like a V, coming off the rear of whatever it was (I'll say vehicle, because I've seen meteors and comets and it wasn't like either), and it stayed consistent with the forward motion of the vehicle, never lingering, never burning out, no contrail. Husband says it looked to him like a reentry burn. He's pretty well-informed on jets and aeronautics.

I'm not surprised ... news, even radio news, won't cover it unless it's a really screwy contrail from VAFB, then just to answer questions when they know for sure the answer. Otherwise .. it's relegated to kooksville, and probably rightly so most of the time. Even now, entirely possible that this is a covert thing that we spotted. The reason I posted was to see if I could be quick enough to get others to see it. Too late now.

FWIW, more or less north of you are both Edwards AFB, and Area 51/Dreamland.

Maybe, just maybe you saw an Aurora?

Could be. Thanks for the observation! Will suggest it to husband -- dry air at very high altitudes eliminates lingering contrails. In that case, it would have stayed at very high altitude throughout, across horizon in our vista.
