Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Friday he regretted any misunderstandings caused by his comments earlier this week comparing American interrogators at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis.
The White House, Senate Republicans and others had called for an apology after Durbin's comments Tuesday.
Durbin made the comparison after reading an FBI agent's report describing detainees at the Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as being chained to the floor without food or water in extreme temperatures.
''If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings,'' Durbin said Tuesday.
On Friday, Durbin tried to clarify the issue. ''I have learned from my statement that historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood. I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings: Our soldiers around the world and their families at home deserve our respect, admiration and total support," he said in another statement.

If the republicans had any stones, which they don't, they would invoke proceedings to remove Turban Durbin from office (takes a 2/3 vote).

What "the dick" regrets is that (he thinks) we took what he said wrong - he doesn't regret what he said one iota. Keep talking turban-durbin... please.

If that was an apology, I am the queen of England. This sorry POS is an abarrassement to this country and a threat to our armed forces.

Durbin didnt mis speak he saw a chance to fire a cheap shot at the Bush administration and he took it. What he is sorry for is that it backfired on him.
The rest of his Dem pals would have done the same thing. America means nothing to them unless they are running it.
To: Tumbleweed_Connection
he regrets the YOU misunderstood him....it is all your fault, not his.

At the VERY LEAST, Durbin needs to be censored, and we all need to make that happen by calling both of our Senators.

We MUST get Durbin to show us that FBI agent's memo he's quoting from. I understand it's HIS reading of it and it's open to INTERPRETATION. Put the memo on the internet, Durbin Laden, and let us freepers take a gander at it like freeper Buckhead did with the Rather "document".
Please release it, let it go
'Cause we don't trust you any mo
To live a lie is more than low
So release it, traitor, let it go.

That's exactly what you should do! Sean Hannity had Newt & Zell on his show yesterday and it was agreed that unless these Democrat senators hear from their outraged constituents demanding Durbin's censure, it won't happen.
Please make the calls....

Leni, the memo is on the internet
here (PDF document).
And here's an index of released documents.
The one Durbin read is down near the bottom and dated 08/02/04.

He made the first comments late in the day too. I think he was trying to preach to the faithful DUmmies without anyone else noticing. So he used an empty Senate chamber.
I'm not sure how the story got out, but I first heard of it being broadcast on Laura Ingram the next morning. Is she the one who broke it?

Senate Republican's either are not listening to their base... or their so infatuated with 'comity' that they've turned queer on us.
I choose the latter.

As I posted yesterday on a
thread similar to this one...
Sorry DICK. Too late DICK.
Shudda, wooda, cuda, DICK.
You messed up DICK.
Big time DICK.
True contrition would be to go before you Senate colleagues and truly apologize to the soldiers at Gitmo and elsewhere.
But even after that,
The damage is done DICK.
The message has been sent loud and clear DICK.
Nothing can cause the message to be cancelled DICK.
Just what you and your treasonous friends wanted DICK.
Hope yer happy DICK.
DICK is a sleazebag scumball.
