I agree with the senator that says 'some of them should be executed' - let's do it and do it now. examples need to be set.

Look, they want to be martyrs, we want them to be martyrs. What's the problem?

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, said the United States may face terrorism "as long as you and I live."

If only the solution were that easy.

Murderers traditionally in liberal states get life in prison in many states the prisons are a hell of a lot tougher than Gitmo...and not on a tropical beach.

Last I heard all these Moozelum terrorists were going to commit Holy Suicide?

Guess they really must be enjoying their stay among the infidels ..but then who wants to go back to snowy winters in A-Stan when you can winter in Gitmo and eyeball the pretty infidel female attendants

With the RATS biggest reason for closing this facility being we are embarrassing ourselves in the eyes of the International community. [Translation Germany and France] Forgive me if I don't give a hoot what those jack asses think of us! Again another losing argument coming from the traitorous Dims!

'some of them should be executed'

I think they should all be charged, given a speedy trial by the military and summarily shot.

That's just me though.

If they are released they will have to kill them somewhere else.

Just do it now.

I never saw disgust and anger on anyone's face like those emotions displayed by General Hemingway (and the other general) during the Gitmo hearing today.

They were actually glaring at the DemonRat committee members especially when it was intimated that the military was violating the Geneva Conventions and the U.S. Constitution.

Other thinly-veiled 'Rat insults and slander against the military were par for the course today during the hearing.

Good thing these fine officers have nerves of steel and years of training in self-discipline. I would have jumped over the table and throttled Spectre, Durbin, Feingold and Company with their own ugly ties.

Well, that's only dreaming on my part.....and that's why I'm not a general in our military.....only a foot-soldier in the FR trenches.

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of the reason for these people just sitting in Guantanamo without a trial of some kind is that the various "human rights watchdogs" have sued to grant them full American legal rights. They don't want them tried under a military tribunal system and so the cases are winding their way through the courts. So a large part of the delay is due to that....we can't try them in either venue until the decisions come down. That being said, it needs to be firmly established, and restated time and again by the Bush Administration (which they just do not do very well, in my opinion - instead of making this central point, they will argue all these minutia) that these people do not qualify for the rights and guarentees accorded to Prisoners of War and so do not fall under the Geneva Conventions. On the other hand, the libertarian in me is very uncomfortable with imprisoning anyone without some type of mechanism for at least periodic review and evaluation. That's not to say that they are entitled to the full legal rights of American citizens, but I'm also somewhat uncomfortable with the thought that any government is so infallible that they don't occasionally imprison someone under false pretenses. My fear is that, with no defined mechanism for review, that a "Cover your A**" mentality could result in someone spending years in Guantanamo when they weren't necessarily a bona fide threat. I'm not sure, however, how that review would necessarily be set up to ensure that military secrecy be maintained while achieving a measure of independence that would allow for a realistic assessment of whether the person is, in fact, a threat.

As for interrogation procedures, I would definitely intensify them. We need to fight this war to win it, not to make the rest of the world like us.

I've got a solution: establish that they can be held for up to 10 years... If at the end of that time, they are no longer giving useful information, or they are perceived as no longer being a threat to American citizens, soldiers, cities or infrastructure, they can then be released back to their home countries. If not, they can be detained for another 10 years.

Seems fair to me.

You are so right. But let's go even further and give all of them the ultimate torture -- send them home.

Where are the 9/11 families ?
I can't imagine that even the most liberal of them are pleased that so many Democrats and the usual Republicans are defending the terrorists.
I have come to the conclusion that Democrats, the UR ( usual Republicans ), Islamic terrorists and their sympathizers
( see above ) have got to be the most pampered, effeminate, easily offended, baby cats to inhabit the planet.
Anyone who has gone through BCT in any of the branches is laughing their asses off at the hysteria over rooms that are too cold or too hot.
Nevermind SEALS, RANGERS, Delta and all manner of SF.
A night in a heavily air conditioned room, even in the "unspeakable " fetal position is like being in a 5 star resort to Special Ops.
I suggest that we have a Gitmo "In " where many of us-young and old, male and female,
show up and spend the night in a hot room or a cold room to demonstrate that it is not intolerable or inhumane or a national embarrassment ( see the US Senate).
Just as long as we get our lemon fish with two fresh vegetables, rice pilaf, two fruits , a new Bible and five prayer meetings a day.

Guantanamo inmates can be held 'in perpetuity'

Works for me.

This country doesn't so much have an "image" problem as it has a "Desperate Democrat" problem.

For months, Dems and their media cheerleaders have been tearing down the image of the U.S. and poisoning world opinion about our country. They feed overseas news outlets and antiwar groups with exaggerated accounts of prison abuses, fabricating stories whenever it appears to be to their advantage.

They think, wrongfully IMHO, it will help them politically in the next election by securing the moonbat vote that might stray to Nader or his ilk.

The solution to the image problem is not to close Gitmo; it is to ship these critics who aid and abet our enemies, and hinder our prosecution of the War on Terror, to Guantanamo for the duration of the conflict.

That would serve their interest in prison diversity since they would be able to commune with the prisoners, lock arms and sing Kumbaya together; that is, if their throats are still in tact.

Frankly I see no point in keeping them alive this long. Sure, maybe a year or 2 because they might have some information. But three years? Any information they might have is already stale.

I read, I think today that some of those released have already joined al Qaeda and back to fighting.

I hope we stop releasing them.

"At a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Republican Chairman Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania said Congress should help to define the legal rights of the inmates at the prison..."

They're POWs! And we're the only country in THE WORLD that still honors the Geneva Convention.

However, some of those guys gave up willingly because they knew they'd get better treatment from Americans than they would from their own countrymen.

"Guantanamo Bay is an international embarrassment to our nation, to our ideals, and it remains a festering threat to our security," Leahy said.

"Our great country, America, was once viewed as a leader in human rights and the rule of law, and justly so. Guantanamo has undermined our leadership, has damaged our credibility, has drained the world's goodwill for America at an alarming rate," Leahy added.

This leftist enemy of America is worse than the terrorists themselves. About making some room for Leahy at Guantanamo?

Beware the enemy within!
