After Action Report Schwarzenegger at Santa Monica College
6/14/05 | n/a

Posted on 06/14/2005 9:30:07 PM PDT by absalom01

I'm posting this at RonDog's request, and to give a quick update on a successful FReep at SaMo City College -- the gang is still "networking" at the after-party, so photos should follow!

Kudos to RonDog for organizing 20+ FReepers, plus some outstanding SaMo College Republicans who met at the corner of 16th and Pico in support of Governor Ahhnold, and to help counter the cancer from A.N.S.W.E.R. We had tons of media exposure -- all of the local TV stations, radio, and print outlets were there, and many interviewed folks from our side. We should see some of this on the local news tonight. The "alternative" press was out in force, and interviews were given, but you could tell that their hearts weren't in it!

We did have some attention from the smelly opposition, but nothing untoward occured, which is always good.

The bad guys were broken up into two groups, a block to the east of our location. The Mechistas and Answer commies had their little Klatch, and the Union thugs had a separate gathering.

My own little anecdote: as I was approaching our corner (late, per usual), a young woman warned me to "be careful, there's fascists on the corner". When I arrived at the corner, I didn't see any of those, just a bunch of nice people holding "go Arnold" signs. So, she was either engaging in hyperbole, or (more likely) is an example of the unhinged left.

Following the festivities on the street, we repaired to a local eatery, and were joined by the college Republicans. According to their report, no major nonsense occured during Arnold's speech, though a few members of the "progressive alliance" walked out, and some people made low-level noise to ruin the event for the rest of the people there.

Hoping others will fill in.

"Yes, I don't understand who came up with the idea that screaming the word fascist would gain credibility no matter what, but these folks do have followers."

They usually look in the mirror of their own subconscious to think up accusations against us. It's amazing how often that is true. Just imagine if the right did have absolute control of all three branches. Wouldn't that just be terrible? 10 Commandments in government buildings. Oh my! Killing babies illegal-- the horror! Much safer borders. Yikes! School choice? Gives me the chills. A vast economic boom from a national sales tax? Sorry if I'm scaring you. And lo and behold, less government waste...? I'm sorry. I guess that belongs in a Steven King novel.

To everyone who came to SMC today, thank you all so much. It is thanks only to your efforts that the reputation of Santa Monica College wasn't irreparably damaged by the protests during the Governor's visit. We may have been outnumbered and our voices drowned in the din, but the nonetheless we made our presence felt. Students, teachers, the Governor, and the public at large know that we were there.

More important than that, we let the leftists at SMC know that their stranglehold on the campus will no longer go unchallenged. They know now that they will have to fight to maintain what they once assumed was theirs by right.

On behalf of the SMC College Republicans, once again we thank you.

We're really excited about the great press coverage of the event the we've seen so far, and I'm sure that there's more to come. It's was a bright day for FReepers and SMC Republicans, one that was darkened by only one small cloud.

As of right now the SMC Corsair - (see article), which is the Santa Monica College newspaper has mentioned absolutely nothing about our rally, in fact they didn't even mention us at all. This, in spite of the fact that the new managing editor of the Corsair made explicit promises that we would be given "fair and balanced" coverage. We find this rather odd considering that the LA Times and AP saw fit to write about us.

We understand that it's been a long day, and that reporters might be too tired to file their stories before bedtime. The Corsair does mention that there will be ongoing coverage of the graduation all week, and we hope that this gross oversight will be remedied shortly. If not, people might call into question the impartiality of the newspaper's staff. We'll be sure to keep you all posted.

Thanks again for being there folks. It was a blast, we'll have to do it again sometime.

You should've asked her to define fascism. That's what I do when confronted by people using that epithet. They usually can't.

Nice work on all fronts. Good presence. Good, effective PR work.

It was a wonderful gesture for the governor to come back to Santa Monica College and make a commencement speech. It's unfortunate that we've lost our manners in this society and can't let the students have their day.

Kudos to you Freepers for keeping the rabble at bay.

I am looking forward to doing my part in Wash, DC on 9/24.

The protest was held as Governor Schwarzenegger spoke at the commencement ceremony for the 75th anniversity graudation at Santa Monica College

Arnold Schwarzenegger will never forget the events of today. And neither will I.

The graduation the new class here at Santa Monica College was just the opportunity a certain person had to use to his advantage. The current governor of the state of California was going to be the commencement speaker for the ceremony. To some students, faculty, and family members had more then a few words to say to our governor that spoke at the graduation ceremony that just ended not to long ago.

Arnold Schwarzenegger received an Associate of Art degree from Santa Monica College and that is also why he was picked to speak at the ceremony. Students chanted out words like "Kindergarten Cop sucked" that were said by Saladin Thomas, an SMC Student that was in the stadium seating area.

Many different groups showed up to express there voice some where against the governor some where against him. For example, the Lyndon Larouche Youth Moment arrived at the graduation and took up a place right next to where the friends and family of the students graduating had to enter through the grandstands, chanting loudly. However, an unidentified group of protesters chanted in Spanish "Pendejo" which means Dumbass in Spanish.

Some people that protested got removed from the graduation ceremony and one person in particular got taken away for battery by Santa Monica College Police Department. The suspect was not arrested but the report will be given to the District Attorneys Office and if they believe there is a case they will issue a warrant for the suspect's arrest.

The reason for the suspect not being arrested on the spot was because of lack of resources available at this current moment. But Sergeant Jay Moroso from the Santa Monica Police Department said, "It does not matter if he gets arrested today or later".

Jerry Rubin Former Corsair reporter back in 1984 was attending the event and was an anti-Arnold supporter and had a shirt that said "Recall Arnold" and "Special Interest Junkie."

Not everyone was against the governor. One such person was SMC Student Jason Troutman who had picked his politician without a doubt. "I think its stupid that everyone is making such a big deal about it and I think he's is not coming here as the Governor, but he is coming here as an Alumni; Its his Alma Mater let him come support the graduates."

Santa Monica College Professor Frank Dawson said that the "governor did not have much to say that benefited the students, it was all about him."

It was a graduation that will never be forgotten. The protestors made listening to the governor speak about himself and his career very hard to understand.

SMC Graduation a Lesson in Politics

By Ann K. Williams
Staff Writer

June 15 -- As the bleachers at Corsair Field filled Tuesday evening and the graduates in their robes marched around the track, it looked like the Santa Monica College graduation would be the cheerful, upbeat ceremony that many of the graduates had hoped for.

But the pomp and circumstance quickly turned into a political maelstrom with the first mention of the speaker about to deliver the commencement speech, sparking the vocal demonstration against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that protestors had been preparing for more than a month.

The boos and cheers started as soon as Board of Trustees President Carole Currey mentioned Schwarzenegger's name. And they didn’t end until the governor completed a 20 minute speech often drowned out by the noise of the crowd.

Throughout it all, the governor had a broad confident smile and appeared at ease as the boos and derisive whistles grew in intensity, smiling as though he were being cheered. It was a perfect illustration of his message to persevere against all odds.

"The most important thing is for you to go deep down inside and to ask yourself, 'What do I want to accomplish,'" Schwarzenegger, who graduated from SMC in the early 1970s, told the crowd of more than 3,000.

"I knew that one day I would achieve that because I saw myself as the champion,” he said. “I saw myself as the guy with the trophies in my hand.”

Schwarzenegger’s address came one day after he announced a special November election to put his policies before the people after failing to make headway with the Democrat-controlled State legislature.

His policies have angered students, educators and public employees, who used the graduation ceremony as a public forum to express their opposition.

During Schwarzenegger’s speech, one faculty member held up a sign denouncing the governor’s failure to keep his promise to return education funds, while three other faculty members stood up and turned their backs on him.

But the gesture, like the sign, was lost on the governor, who was facing the other way. All he heard were the cheers.

As though inspired by the faculty members, two young women in the bleachers turned around displaying the backs of their t-shirts which read: "We deserve better."

Other protesters in the crowd held up their own banners, and when the police took them away, the boos grew even louder, augmented by ululations.

By this time, the sign behind the governor had been changed to "Honor Children Respect Teachers."

While some in the crowd came prepared to protest the governor’s visit with signs and slogans, others, like Benjamin Meskin, were in favor of the governor's visit.

"I'm really happy he's here,” Meskin said. “I think it's an honor."

But many expressed reservations about the governor's appearance.

"I'm just excited to see my friend graduate from nursing school,” said Stephanie Horka, a registered nurse who works at a hospital with her friend. “I wouldn't be here if it was just him,” she said, referring to the governor.

Jose Burgos felt even more strongly. "He's against the students, the college, our people,” Burgos said. “We don't need him here at all."

But then Burgos went on to tell the story of his friend, Ivett Arcia, and it bore a striking resemblance to the governor's life. Like him, she was an immigrant. She came from El Salvador and had a hard time getting into college.

"The college asked questions like you have to be one year living in the United States,” Burgos said with animation. “Finally she got in. I'm so happy, so proud of her.

"What it means to me is, not knowing English at all, so much hard work, is to me so wonderful," he said.

The governor had come to give a very similar message. But it was hard to hear. His audience was mixed between supporters and opponents, and they weren't afraid of letting their feelings be heard.

But Schwarzenegger was up for it. He wasn't going to back down. The more strident the protesters got, the more forceful he got. He stuck to his script in an impressive show of will, and the conflict actually seemed to illustrate his point.

He exhorted those students who could actually hear him to set their own goals and persevere.

"The first thing they said to me when I went to an agent... they said to me, 'You will never make it in the movie business, Arnold,'” he said. "But I did not listen, because I had again a clear vision."

He made a reference to "Conan the Barbarian" and got the only unmixed cheer of the evening. Even his foes were not going to boo that movie.

When he got to the line "the greatest state, the greatest country in the world," the pandemonium became complete. The faculty and administrators, most of whom were facing the right way, gave him a standing, cheering ovation.

Most of the graduates were standing by this time, booing, cheering, laughing, facing the bleachers, talking to each other animatedly, calling their friends with the exciting news on their cell phones, acting like they were at a fun party.

The protesters in the bleachers were also standing, and the crowds surrounding them were shouting as though they were at a rock concert. It became difficult to tell whether they were shouting for or against the governor, or just shouting for the joy of it.

By the time the governor finished his speech, urging the students to, "Work, work, work! Study, study, study! Win, win, win! Give back to the community," the graduates were stamping rhythmically on the risers.

But Schwarzenegger had done what he'd come to do. He had shared his story of overcoming adversity and given his audience an illustration of his message.

After he left, the party atmosphere continued, though it was toned down a little. The boos stopped, and were replaced by cheers as the graduates filed up to the stage where they received their diplomas.

Most of the graduates were sitting down now, and their families were content with shouting out their names and taking pictures.

The focus of celebration had returned to the students, though it wasn't ever as decorous as some had hoped.

Small but Vocal Demonstration Greets Governor

By Gene Williams
Staff Writer

June 15 -- It was eerily quiet around Santa Monica College an hour before Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger was scheduled to arrive for the commencement ceremony of the class of 2005.

Traffic in the neighborhood was lighter than normal for a Tuesday afternoon, and only a helicopter circling the campus hinted that something out of the ordinary was about to happen.

A little before 5 p.m. a small group began to assemble in the campus parking lot at 19th and Pico where Cindy Vitto was preparing picket signs with slogans like "Unions Yes Arnold No" and "Return the $2 Billion to Schools" to protest the governor's visit.

"They said the volunteers distributed 150,000 flyers or something like that, so we'll see what happens," said Vitto, who hoped the demonstration would be a success.

Then the dozen or so protestor picked up their signs, walked to the edge of the parking lot facing Pico and lifted them for passing cars to see.

A couple of the cars honked. A young woman on roller blades wearing a tank-top and carrying a “No Arnold” sign above her head zipped down the sidewalk as others arrived to join in.

But the thousands of protestors that many had predicted never materialized. At its peak, the demonstration only numbered in the mid-hundreds. But what they lacked in numbers, the demonstrators did their best to make up for in noise and spirit.

"Schwarzenegger we're no fools. Keep your promises to our schools," the chanted. "Hey governor, you're a liar. Keep it up and you'll be fired."

Schwarzenegger's visit to Santa Monica College came one day after he called a special election to put his economic policies before the voters, policies his critics charge rob students and workers, but which he contends are necessary to return the state to fiscal health..

From an elevated patio near the 19th Street parking lot, Charles Lester of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor denouced the governor’s proposal.

"We not only have to defeat these initiatives, we have to defeat this whole power grab,” Lester said. "So this is not a fight of just the public employees.

“This is a fight for all of California,” Lester said. “We're going to defeat these initiatives and send the governor home.”

Scwharzenegger has been under increasing attack from unions since he unveiled his budget plans in January and has been picketed repeatedly by teachers, firefighters and other public employees.

"Governor Arnold Scwharzenegger, stop the rhetoric,” said Kenneth Mason, a teacher at SMC and one of the protest’s main organizers.

“Stop trying to balance the budget on the backs of our students, on the backs of the middle class, on the poor," he said, echoing the view of other speakers.

The governor raised tuition on public college students but not taxes on the wealthy, said Mason, likening Scwharzenegger’s policies to a "Robin Hood horror film" where the governor "steals from the poor and gives to the rich."

School Board member Oscar de la Torre gives speech.

School Board member Oscar De La Torre, who acted as emcee, warned of the dire impacts of the governor’s cuts.

"I think it's really important to remember that these cuts in education means less opportunity for our youth,” said de la Torre, who is executive director of the Pico Youth and Family Center.

"And when people have less opportunity they have less hope. And when there is less hope there is more self-destruction and an increase in violence,” he said. “So, in the end, the governor is contributing to a less safe community."

Four past Santa Monica mayors took part in the demonstration: Paul Rosenstein, James Conn, Judy Abdo and Michael Feinstein, a Green Party member who said none of this would be happening if Pete Camejo had been elected governor.

From left: Former mayors Judy Abdo, Paul Rosenstein, James Conn and Michael Feinstein

If Camejo had won, Feinstein said, "We would be learning how justice improves everything.”

Not everyone who showed up on Pico Boulevard with a sign came to protest the governor. A few came to protest the protestors.

Nearby, amid television camera trucks with antennas extended, was Ray Blumhurst who said he retired after 16 years working for the college as its mechanical systems and energy management supervisor. Blumhurst said he had been discriminated against by female faculty members.

“I say 'keep your hate to yourself,'" said Blumhurst, standing in front of his pick-up truck adorned with American flags and a large billboard that read, "Man Hating Feminist Lies Harm Us All."

At the 17th Street entrance to the campus, a young man with a PA system in a shopping cart and a woman with a bullhorn led the crowd of some 200 in chants from opposite sides of the street.

"Money for jobs and education. Not for wealthy corporations," they chanted.

A woman and her daughter who live nearby said they saw the governor enter the campus from the South side off Pearl street.

"It was a black car with tinted windows and there were police on motorcycles," the older woman said. But she did not actually see who was inside.

"When Clinton came he got out and shook hands," she said. "He was so cute. But Republicans have to hide behind dark windows."

Earlier, a cheer went up when about a half dozen faculty donning black robes and mortar-boards joined the group before heading to Corsair Field for the ceremony.

One of them, Greg Brookins, and accounting teacher at the college said he was "just trying to give my voice to the students and the difficulties they have going here in light of the budget cuts.

"As faculty, we just need to have a presence here," he said.

Here is a SHORT EXCERPT from www.sacbee.com:
...Schwarzenegger scheduled the campaign stops around delivering the commencement address Tuesday at Santa Monica College. The speech was greeted with protests.

Opposition to Schwarzenegger's visit had been building over the last month.

Opponents chanting "hypocrite," blowing whistles and waving signs complaining about the upcoming special election tried to drown out his speech.

Most of the 600 graduates could hear Schwarzenegger recount his arrival at Santa Monica College in 1970 and the classes he took there until 1974.

But the chants and catcalls from opponents were too loud for most of the graduates' relatives and friends to hear the governor's 16-minute speech.

About 25 graduates and seven faculty members turned their back on Schwarzenegger during his address.

Two faculty members on the podium with the governor held up a sign with the message: "Honor your promises to our children. Respect teachers." Before the ceremony, about 600 protesters gathered outside the college stadium to complain about a 44 percent increase in community college fees last year under Schwarzenegger.

The fees rose from $18 per credit to $26 per credit. But the governor has proposed no increase this year, and the community college fees remain among the lowest in the nation.

Bruce Smith, the college's spokesman, said 95 percent of the protesters weren't from the college.

FWIW, here is the current version of the Associated Pres story (again) -- from Yahoo! NEWS:
Schwarzenegger Jeered at Graduation Speech

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD, Associated Press Writer 52 minutes ago

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to his alma mater turned into an exercise in perseverance when virtually his every word was accompanied by catcalls, howls and piercing whistles from the crowd.

Schwarzenegger's face appeared to redden during his 15-minute commencement address Tuesday to 600 graduates at Santa Monica College, but he ignored the shouting as he recalled his days as a student and, later, his work as a bodybuilder and actor.

"Always go all out and overcome your fears," he told the graduates. "Work, work, work. Study, study, study."

Inside the stadium, the drone from hundreds of rowdy protesters threatened to drown out the governor's voice at times. Many in the crowd erupted in boos when a police officer pulled down a banner criticizing the estimated $45 million cost of the Nov. 8 special election that Schwarzenegger proposed Monday.

The governor is backing three ballot initiatives that call for imposing a cap on state spending, stripping lawmakers of the power to draw their own districts and increasing the time it takes teachers to gain tenure.

At times during Schwarzenegger's speech, cheers and boos mingled, and the graduates themselves appeared eager to hear the governor. Many applauded at one point when the noise from the bleachers briefly subsided.

"It didn't matter. I just ignored them," graduate Ray Lewis, 21, of Los Angeles, said when asked about the racket from protesters. Schwarzenegger's "political views and all that had nothing to do with the graduation," Lewis said.

Schwarzenegger has been feuding for months with groups he calls "special interests" — teachers, nurses and other public employee unions who accuse him of selling out to big business while shortchanging education, health care and other programs. Those groups have hounded Schwarzenegger at his public appearances.

The special election "is a waste of money that you could be using for education, hospital care. He's wasting it on his vanity election," said Sue Cannon, a nurse who was among the crowd outside the stadium.

About two dozen Schwarzenegger supporters also rallied outside the stadium. One of them, Ben Eisenberg, who heads the Santa Monica College Republicans, said the ceremony "should be about the students."

Schwarzenegger left the stage almost immediately after his speech, speeding across the infield in a golf cart surrounded by sprinting security guards. Across the field, he pulled up toward a waiting SUV and a large steel gate was closed behind him.

Schwarzenegger took general studies classes at the two-year community college between 1970 and 1974. He later took correspondence courses through the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he earned a degree in 1979.

Rude Protestors Ruin Commencement Ceremony

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger returned to his alma mater last night to deliver a commencement speech. Schwarzenegger did not intend on turning the graduation into a political event, but a number of protestors did just that anyway, jeering almost continuously through his speech at Santa Monica College:

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to his alma mater turned into an exercise in perseverance when virtually his every word was accompanied by catcalls, howls and piercing whistles from the crowd.
Schwarzenegger's face appeared to redden during his 15-minute commencement address Tuesday to 600 graduates at Santa Monica College, but he ignored the shouting as he recalled his days as a student and, later, his work as a bodybuilder and actor. ...

It seems rather churlish to stage a political protest at a non-political event like this college graduation. It hijacks an evening that should have focused on the graduates, instead of some selfish and self-serving political opponents of the Governator. But if they wanted to protest, they should have observed enough decorum to allow Arnold to at least be heard by the audience in attendance. Actions like this point out a political narcissism and absolutism that reveal nothing but the immaturity of Arnold's opposition.

And what are they protesting? The fact that Arnold has called a special election for a direct democratic vote on issues that the legislature has refused to address, including the chronic reapportionment problem that has almost crippled California democracy for decades. While the costs of such an election should be considered and debated as to its necessity, calling for more democracy hardly qualifies as such a disaster that it excuses opponents from acting like idiots and ruining the evening for 600 college graduates.

The Left has no sense of proportion, especially in California, where they have behaved like the spoiled children most of them are for many years now. Last night's spectacle of disruption and rude behavior is just the latest example of the thoughtlessness and reflexive self-indulgence that typifies Leftist activities in the Golden State and elsewhere.

Good morning, Ron!

I sure enjoyed attending the rally supporting Arnold & his reforms at SMC yesterday. I know we would have had a much larger group there -- if the city parking regs weren't so oppressive. Absolutely NO where to park -- and all the side streets required city "permits." This lack of parking really put a damper on our efforts. Meanwhile, those Unions goons no doubt bussed in their tiny rent-a-mob, and of course there are a lot of home-grown socialists in SM. Parking's no problem for them!

Good job, Ron!

I sure hope these reforms pass -- for the future & our kids! They are desperately needed if we are not to become the country of France, and the junk-bond state, out here in CA. It will be interesting to see if Arnold can get people to the polls for this election!
