After Rep. Duncan Hunter's eye-opening description of how terrorist suspects are living high on the hog at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, prisoners from around the world will no doubt be clamoring for a 'gulag' cell of their own.
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, the House Armed Services Committee chairman began by detailing tonight's dinner menu at Gitmo - which all detainees, including one suspected of being involved in the 9/11 plot, will enjoy.
"For Sunday they're going to be having Orange Glazed Chicken, Fresh Fruit Roupee, Steamed Peas and Mushrooms, Rice Pilaf - we treat them very well," he told Fox.
Last night, Hunter said, the U.S. "torture victims" enjoyed the same kind of gourmet fare, including an entree of "Lemon-baked Fish."
On the other hand, feeding the detainees MRE's, the standard fare given to our troops on the front lines, is strictly verboten - considered an "abuse" under restrictions imposed by Congress, Hunter said.
The top House Republican also noted that the religious practices of the terrorist suspects held at the U.S. "gulag" are scrupulously accommodated, explaining:
"We give them honey and dates when they break fast at Ramadan. We give them prayer beads and prayer oil - all paid for [by the U.S. taxpayer.]
"In fact," he said, "if you did that for American GI's - if you had a call to prayer five times a day - the ACLU would sue on the basis that we violated the separation between church and state."
Important safety tip. I'd be skeptical of any military menu until I see the actual food on the tray.
yeah, we know that they've probably not had it that good in a long time.
the nyt mag today has a feature story on "torture" at gitmo.
did the nyt ever hear about saddam's torture?
My husband has had seven heart attacks and has a stint in one of his arteries. It's Sunday, and he's working. Nice to know he's killing himself so the terrorist can eat so well.
Two thoughts on this. If we are accommodating prisoners by providing their religious beads, Koran's and 5 calls daily to prayer, why are we not just giving them only what their country and customs generally consider edible? IMO these prisoners, detainees, should not be catered to in any way. They can pray 5 times a day or more without us taking the responsibility to remind them. They can eat what Americans provide for other prisoners. Closing this base and moving them to another will simply start another round of protests from those who make their living doing such. Enough already of making taxpayers pay for the extra high upkeep of our sworn enemies.
Gee. You know what this little girl and her mom (pictured here) are having for dinner tonight?
It's a trick question. They're not having anything for dinner, because they are dead. They were incinerated on flight 175 on 9-11.
The ACLU shot was brilliant. Need their named mentioned more often when drawing ridiculous/ironic analogies.
LOL! Taste test also required. Our (Navy) cooks made pineapple upside-down cake every week or so. They never could figure out how to make it, so they baked it pineapple right-side-up. Gooey and nasty, but it looked good!
Gimme a Whataburger.
Dang, my monitor just fogged over.
=====
Take:
8-10 oz OJ concentrate, melted
2 oz soy sauce
3 tbsp orange marmalade
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped (''minced'', if you prefer)
optional -- 1 tsp marjoram leaves (fresh is better, dried is fine)
1 tbsp minced fresh ginger (or powdered ginger, or cinnamon is VERY good here)
1 large orange
1 chicken, cut into 8 pieces, excess fat trimmed
Place chicken in container with lid. Mix the OJ, soy, marmalade, garlic, and ginger (or cinnamon) and add to the chicken. Cover, and marinate chicken for 3 hours, refrigerated. Remove chicken from marinade (well, take the container out of the fridge first, of course (g!)). Do not drain. Slice the orange and retain the marinade.
Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. While waiting for temperature, in a small saucepan, thicken remaining marinade by reducing it by 25% over medium heat.
Place orange slices at the bottom of a 13x9 baking dish. Add chicken and 2/3rds of marinade to baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until juices run clear when a breast piece is stabbed with a fork. Baste twice during cooking, using remaining marinade, about every 9-10 minutes (commercial breaks were made for basting!). Serve with sesame rice (very tasty), or your favourite cheesy potatoes. If you like, you can use the dish residue, a bit of water, dash of salt, dash of black pepper, and 1 tbsp cornstarch to make a nice little sauce for the chicken.
Note: I prefer to skin the chicken pieces (that would be BEFORE prep...LOL!); most recipes do not. Your choice.
Eat hearty!
Me too.
Pray for W and Our Troops
I'd feed them lead.
;^)
Nah.
Cooking is against my religion.
Ah, well, to each his own (this really is a very tasty dish, btw).
Ahhh..Fine American Cuisine, haven't had one since '69, the nearest Whataburger Restaurant is in Southern Alabama near I-65... I wonder, Do they Accept Mail-orders. :D
Prisoners being treated better than the American taxpayers.
