i've done stooopid things tooo, and regretted them... but i NEVER fooled myself into believing that I wasn't to blame for what happened. to say she is responsible for her own actions doesn't make her murder any less wrong or tragic because it could of been avoided...

We all bear responsibility--of course. I've used this example before. My 14 year old gets very, very angry with me because I will not let him leave the subdivision when all of his friends can.
He is a good boy and generally obeys me. But, he is 14. It is part of his job description (ha-ha) to test the limits and to see if he can get away with leaving on his bike with his friends. They usually swim in the lake, a big no-no for my son as no adults are present. I always find out about it and he is always punished.
If, God forbid, something happened to him I would hate to see a thread on Freerepublic blaming me for letting him wander or reading posts like "how can he be so stupid?"
(the older ones were not much different when they were 14 or 18).
The only way we can protect our kids from themselves is if we lock them up. You do the best you can and pray that at some point in their transition from late teen to early adult something sticks.
Being a parent is no different. I can look back on raising the boys and say "If I knew then what I know now." I have been able to do it with the 14 year old. When he was little I would look at him and say "Been there, done that and those tears won't work on me anymore." He is somewhat more responsible than his 2 older brothers, but he can still be a stupid (and I mean that as only a loving parent can mean it) 14 year old.

It just doesn't matter how "upstanding" they appeared. She didn't KNOW them. I tell my daughters to do reference checks, meet the parents, etc. I'm a virtual "hovercraft" and they appreciate it, especially the one who now has two young girls.
You know, if we're not critical of "young and naive" kids, they'll never learn. They need to hear it more than the ones who are not naive. The "naive" part might have put her in harm's way. Do not elevate bad judgment to something that's "expected."
Having a 4.0 means nothing after a few drinks. The mind and body get real loose and uninhibited and often girls black out. Especially girls who don't know their own drinking limits because they haven't had enough "practice".
I heard him say that as well. Does anyone know what the other networks are reporting? Some have said that CNN never backed off the confession story. I watched Msnbc for a few seconds hours ago, and they seemed to take a middle ground...just reporting on a lot of confusion.
You can't protect kids from themselves, but you can teach kids how to protect themselves from bad people. That begins by offering them a bit of ugly truth early on and not pretending the world is all sunshine and light.

My parents (especially my Mom) taught me the same thing... I don't know what happened when I was 17/18 but that wasn't coming through (like most things she said had and still do) it was just what was the excitement of the moment. I did and I'm glad I'm still here to talk about it.

I am tangentially working in the music/resort/video business , so I run across this stuff intended for teens. There are hundreds of DVDs on the market that celebrate these events. You would not believe what goes on.... it makes your local strip club look like a church dance. It shocks me, saddens me and makes me feel OLD.
God help the parents of these thousands of girls on video... the images will haunt them all forever. It's as if a million girls did a porn movie without pay and the images got into the web for mass distribution.

I had heard that part earlier this week about her having trouble in the restroom, however supposedly some of her friend girls were in the restroom as well. I am puzzuled, did they (her friends) just leave Natalie there?
