Some of us who were/are 'good girls', most would say 'smart', and led well protective lives at home did some really stupid things when we were 18. My girlfriend from high school and I have discussed a couple of times something we did in which we think/feel something bad probably would have happened (to make a long story short - -we got in a car w 2 guys in Denver that we didn't know and luckily there were a couple of other guys at the place they took us). Unfortunately, when a person is in their teens/early twenties, they think they're infallible, are too trusting, are too naive, and/or nothing bad will happen to *me*. There but for the grace of God.....
I was thinking the same thing.
In her judgment--there's the problem. Really, really bad judgement. It was in the wee hours of the morning, they were guys she barely knew, she was in an unfamiliar country--and when it came to getting into the car, simple math should have told her that in a pinch, she was outnumbered.
We all pay for what we do, for good or ill, and darn, I hope a lot of youngsters are taking note of what happened in Aruba. Even a guy getting into a car with three strange men could have been robbed and killed. It's just d-u-m-b to do things like that--also known as "bad judgment."
At any rate perhaps you did not notice the post I was responding to which wholly blamed her - no mention of the actual killer(s). The lack of compassion for a girl who apparently "had it all" from some here is mind-boggling. Maybe the "had it all" is the basis for it.
It all worked out for you but there was at least one factor that this girl didn't have...
You had a girlfriend there by your side..A friend your trusted...Not just guys you just met...
I'm guessing neither of you would have gotten in the car by yourself and watched the other leave without you..

we insisted on getting out of the car, and boys let us out and were very apologetic about what happened.....
so why are we here on this earth now, when we should have been dead, injured, raped????

My mom used to tell me to cover up my drink w my cocktail napkin when I got up to dance (she had read/heard stories about guys slipping drugs into women's drinks when they weren't looking). I used to say "Oh, Mom"
(actually, I used to think that and say O.K.). In looking back, maybe Mom once again knew and understood a whole lot more than I thought.
No problem. Hopefully the Dutch police are assembling all of the facts. It is best if they are not leaking too much to the press until their investigation is complete. Meanwhile, things may not be as they appear through the cloudy lens of the mainstream media.

The "spokespeople" for the Aruban government aren't govt. employees. They were recruited just to help out on this case. One's a real estate agent, another came from America.
Part of the confusion is these "spokespeople" are not professional.

i raised 1 boy and three girls and taught all of them to NEVER get in a car with strangers...
I certainly felt safer in Aruba than I do in the big city. There are murders here all the time. Kids, adults, and teenagers. Rape, drugs, clubs, and liquor are also here in the big city.
Those that think that some teenagers do not do the same (i.e. drink, have sex, rape, murder) in any US big city or small town for that matter, are in big denial.
To blame Aruba is ridiculous!
17-year-old girls tend to be very trusting and naive.

that says it all......here we have this flaky teenager who is so fly-by-night that she had all her stuff packed and ready to go home in the morning, an is just so flaky that she managed to pull our a 4.0 and a premed scholarship as a HS graduate.....
I bet the local Hooters girls get more sympathy from this crowd....

Isn't it strange how few people see it this way. I equate her fatal evening to the sad outcomes that can and do happen year in and year out among kids her age -
Well, here's a big "duhhh" back at you. Most of us have already offered up our prayers for her and her family--and will probably continue to do so. However, we're pointing out that here is a case where common sense might have saved a life. She chose not to exercise it, preferring instead a night of "making out" with a stranger--with his two friends in the car, no less.
She paid a terrible price for her lack of judgment--but if people learn from it, perhaps others can avoid what happened to her.
