PONCHATOULA, La. (AP) -- From his tire store next door, Donald Moore got an up-close look at the strange changes that went on at the once-bustling Hosanna Church.

For one thing, the congregation had dwindled to a handful of reclusive members who chased away visitors. For another, the windows were painted white so no one could see in. And just before it closed its doors for good a couple of years ago, eight dump trucks came in and spread dirt over the church's back lot.

Authorities said witnesses have described the use of robes, pentagrams on the church floor, sex with a dog and the sacrifice of cats.

Hosanna Church, huh? Nice front for a coven. Yuck.

Glynn Fendlason served as pastor of the church, then known as First Assembly of God, from 1982 to 1989, following the elder Lamonica's death. The active membership dispensed thousands of meals to the poor and elderly.

Fendlason said the younger Lamonica, while his father was pastor, was a "good fellow" who played bass guitar, taught Sunday school and worked with youth groups. Some of the other defendants also were active in the church.

After Fendlason resigned as pastor, he said he stayed out of the church's business for fear of disrupting the congregation, but heard that Lamonica, who became pastor in 1994, excommunicated many members, including members of his own family, and increasingly made the church more isolated.

Wow, a preacher's kid! I hope he repents for this.

Sure, you just have to watch 'Cops' to see demon posession in action. But to take over a 1000 member church? That's a little unusual.

Wow, a preacher's kid!

Who, in my experience were always the trouble makers.

It does seem to be a pattern. It's the dad's fault. He knows the way to raise a child, and doesn't.

Dad's fault? Bill's fault? Betty's fault? Mom's fault? I don't give a damn whose fault it is! There are just some mean sick people on this earth that know the difference between right and wrong and are looking for any excuse to pick wrong. If LA has a firing squad law and need volunteers... I'll make room on my day planner. INFANTS and their own KIDS??????? Forgiveness my backside!

No matter what turns out in court, Fendlason said he believes "there will be another day" for the now-empty church building.

"I believe in the redemptive power of the Lord to make a positive of that situation," he said. "I don't believe the devil will obtain a victory."

As they investigate, they may find evidence of human sacrifice, if they were victimizing their own babies.

So, I take it you're also against abortion? What do we do with those folks who murder their kids in a clinic?

"Who, in my experience were always the trouble makers."

That always seems to be the case, although I doubt it will hold up if someone did some statistical analysis. Probably just get more news coverage.

Nice front for a coven.

The accused were not witches. There is some indication of devil worship, but that is different from Wicca.

I know the difference from experience. Not much of a difference, it's all the occult. But I've heard satanists refer to their groups as covens too.

It's interesting that this occured in the area it did. About 10 or 12 years ago a devil-worshipping cult was broken up in Slidell, about 50 miles down the road from Ponchatoula. That area will probably always attract a few crazies like this because of its history of voodoo worship.

My friend... I am 99.9% pro-life. After all... my mom was pro-life. Although I must admit... I do believe the wrong folks in this world are having the majority of the kids.

The preacher's kid or, maybe even more often, the politician's kid. When I was in high school the source for booze and drugs was the state Senator's son.

Sorry... did not answer the last part.

Make it NOT against the law to do so. Pretty simple.

Not the same things. Paganism relates to Satanism about the way the Nature Conservancy relates to the Baath party.

Yep, one guy was a precher's son in my high school. The wildest, hardest drinking kid you ever saw till he straightened up after graduation. Another guy I went to school with was the son of a local judge. Was a huge drughead and got busted for possession, but thanks to his dad, it was dropped and kept out of the papers.
