1842: snow whitened the highest Appalachians of MD and PA and the Catskills of SE NY. Parts of Essex County (NY) seen 4", Barton and Irasburg, VT eastward to NH and NW Maine were blessed with 10" to 12" of the white stuff, 11" in Berlin, HN, and 3" in Bennington, VT.
1965: heavy rain onto an unusually deep snowpack in the high Uintas of UT caused a flash flood somteime after midnight. It roared down Sheep Creek Canyon and destroyed 3 rec areas, 7 bridges and 5 miles of newly paved roads and swept 7 campers away in the Palisades Campgrounds.
1968: an apparent tornado swept through a rugged, heavily forested area 30mi N of Enterprise, OR. The track was 8-10 miles long and 1/2 to 2 miles wide. ~40 million board feet of lumber was blown down.
1984: Thunderstorm downbursts (straight-line winds) often exceed tornado velocity. A downburst with an estimated speed of 160mph blew a home totally off of its foundation in Rowena, SD and scattered debris for 2 miles. There were two fatalities.

That is a really cool picture. As an amateur photographer, I know how hard it is to capture lightning on film. I've tried.

I live in the Alleghenies, but the Appalachian trail is just a few miles away. Are the Alleghenies part of the Appalachians? And what's with all the weird place names in the East, anyway (for this native Californian)?
