TEHRAN (Reuters) - Hollywood actor Sean Penn, adopting the role of a journalist, scribbled in his notebook as Friday prayer worshippers in Tehran chanted ``Death to America.'' Penn, 44, in Iran on a brief assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle ahead of presidential elections on June 17, may be one of the best known faces in film, but he went unrecognized by the 6,000 faithful at Tehran University. Working with a translator, Penn took copious notes as hardline cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati urged the congregation to vote en masse ``to make America angry.'' The actor, who visited Iraq before and after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 and wrote an account of his second trip for the Chronicle, told Reuters he had decided to come to Iran because of growing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The United States accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons and sponsoring terrorism. Iran denies the charges.

DH is in reruns now. So I am watching it from the beginning. It's out on DVD soon too. Just very different and clever and saucy.
By the way, Sean Penn is underwhelmimg in person. Short and trollish with a large head. A great actor, but a misguided limousine liberal. One of many in Hollywood.
Have you ever seen NIP/TUCK...Julian McMahon is the most handsome man on earth. I am in love with him. He's also very good in this show. Rent the first season in DVD, it's so much better to watch it that way. I guarantee you'll like it!
I'll check it out.
1940: he had decided to come to Germany because of growing tensions between Washington and Berlin
1940: he had decided to come to Japan because of growing tensions between Washington and Tokyo
I think the HBO shows of the last few years have improved network series TV. Forced them to be become better, edgier, more clever, just to compete.
Actually, the really good shows are coming out of the FX Network, of all places! THE SHIELD (my favorite), NIP/TUCK, RESCUE ME, are just a few examples and now they're starting to make movies that look good. They're getting the good actors because of it. Do you watch Deadwood on HBO? I was appalled by it at first, but now, I can't stay away! Ian McShane is so incredible.
The funny this is I think the Sopranos won't do as well this year. It's just been too long...I don't remember anything about the last season (when was that, the late '90's?) except Adriana being killed. Continuity is so important and who cares. THE SHIELD and NIP/TUCK and DEADWOOD. I could live with just those three shows! I'm sending you freepmail about something...
Not surprising at all.
They broke the mold with The Simpsons and Married With Children, years ago.
"Last year I went to Iraq. Before Team America showed up, it was a happy place. They had flowering meadows and rainbow skies, and rivers made of chocolate, where the children danced and laughed and played with gumdrop smiles."

You diversity folks are laugh able......
You think it is just find to pay to see his moives while he preaches against all American and prays for Death to America......that means if you have offspring they might someday be under feudalism........but he is a hell of an Actor!
Should Penn ever return to the US he should be taken by the authorities and shot for Treason!
Activism is a tradition in the Penn family - passed down to Sean by his father Leo. Leo Penn, a writer, director, and actor, was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. When he was called before the notorious House Un-American Activities Committee, and asked to expose Hollywood Communists, Leo Penn refused to name names. With Leo's influence, Sean grew up politically and socially aware. Although his political roots trace back to the 1970s, it is Sean's recent activism that has gained notoriety.
Leo Penn's acting career ended in the early 50s when he refused to name names before the House Un-American Activities Committee and was branded a Communist. Blacklisted in the movie business, he turned to television directing.
Iran should sit up and take notice: Penn visits Iraq and shortly after, kaboom, big invasion.
Penn's presence can only mean bad things for the Mad Mullahs.
/sarcasm
But sometimes, it rolls down the hill from there and lands in the gutter.
Seems Penn and Bernstein have something in common
Both had father's that were commies
"In an attempt to be fair, I will say that Sean Penn's acting in "The Interpreter" is exquisite."
"...and Hanoi Jane was sooo sexy in Barbarella"..."General Arnold was brilliant at Saratoga"..."John Wilkes Booth's acting in "Our American Cousin" was exquisite"..."Fidel sure rolls a good cigar"...well, you get the idea.
Why would you address that at me?
Surely you aren't so critical of others as to believe that an extreme liberal has absolutely zero merit?
If Penn plays with snakes he could get bit.
So you like Hitler,PolPot,Jane Fonda, Hanoi Jane McCain,Stalin,Sadam,Reid,Dean,Hilery!
Butchers and Treasonist are of the same Ilk~!
Sean has had explosure to more knowledge than most......
and he choose to undermind the hand that feeds him......
nor is he thankful to the Creator who set up this nation for ALL LEGALS NO MATTER WHAT OR HOW THEY BELIEVE....
So is it too much to show graditude....meaning don't go a broad and backbite your homeland!
"We will use our acting to end terrorism!"
