TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Authorities raided 17 Chinese restaurants around Michigan that they suspect of ducking millions of dollars in taxes and importing undocumented workers as a "modern version of indentured servants." Search warrants were also served at 21 homes of suspected undocumented Chinese workers. Dozens were involved in the scheme, State Police Lt. Curt Schram said. "It cost them X number of dollars to come to this country and they're trying to work off that debt," Schram said. Investigators believe one family or related families own the restaurants, which are mostly in the central and west-central areas of the Lower Peninsula, the statement said. The owners are suspected of claiming only a third of their actual income and sending part of the proceeds out of the country, while shortchanging the state and federal governments of millions of dollars in sales, unemployment and use taxes, police said. About $400,000 in cash was seized. Nine people were arrested at a Chinese buffet in Petoskey, and two people believed to be undocumented workers were charged with driver's license violations and jailed in Montcalm County. An additional 13 people were found to have deportation orders and were handed over to immigration authorities. "It's some sort of modern version of indentured servants," Emmet County Prosecutor James Linderman said. The investigation began with one detective checking out a report in Newaygo County and eventually involved 22 local, state and federal agencies, Schram said. Businesses in other states also are being looked at, although warrants have been served only in Michigan, he said. The raids turned up "a tremendous amount" of business records written in Chinese that must be translated, Schram said. Copyright 2005 Newsday Inc.

Not surprising. About time too!
They're just doing the jobs Mexicans don't want to do.
They didn't find my missing cat did they?
Yes, but they found it in a spicy brown sauce.
Damn, beat me to it.
I guess the Chinese don't have the lobbyists and votes that the Mexicans do. And of course, they were working for Chinese-owned small businesses instead of White-owned big businesses.
Even Mexicans wouldn't work for those wages. Indentured servants is probably the best term for a lot of those people.
Living in Reno, Nevada, the few times I go down to a casino with my wife, we see a lot of Asians gambling as if the next tsunami will be tomorrow. They can't get the machines to take the money fast enough.
I'm not sure where they come from, San Francisco and Sacramento I presume. They sure don't like men in wheelchairs that's a fact. We move too slow for them, I guess. Nor do they enjoy having someone who will cuss right back at them. LOL
Ummmm, it was delicious.
LOL...I've got two more if you're interested 8>)

Garfields on my fork. Yessiree!
From all indications when I when I clicked on AutoEdit there had been a malfunction. Nothing came back to tell me that the thread was posted.
it is the employers that create the problem. Start shutting down businesses that hire illegals and you have a start to ending the magnet for illegals. Medical costs go down, crime goes down, taxes should go down. Unemployment rates go down. WOW no down side on this one.
Sounds like Granholm just lost the Chinese vote.
I've got to wonder about some of them also being front businesses for the PLA.
RE: I'm not sure where they come from, San Francisco and Sacramento I presume.
That's correct. There are bus companies here in the Bay Area that advertise only in Chinese newspapers. And they go only on round trips to Reno.
My wife and I both enjoy Chinese restaurants so we frequent them. I've often noted that the cashier will look at the handwritten bill, take your money, give you change and close the drawer - having never rung up the charge. ie no documentation. Just to be fair, I've also noted this in other ethnic restaurants, but especially Chinese. Not gonna stop me from going though (grin).
