Close Guantanamo: Carter

FORMER US president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter has called for the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to be closed, "to demonstrate clearly our nation's historic commitment to protect human rights".

"Our government needs to close down Guantanamo and the two dozen secret detention facilities run by the United States as soon as possible," Carter said yesterday in Atlanta at a conference organised by the Carter Centre.

He also called for an end to the policy of transferring prisoners to countries where there have been reports of torture, and pressed for an independent commission to investigate the US detention facilities.

Senator Joseph Biden, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations committee, on Sunday also called for Guantanamo to be closed, saying it represented a danger for the American people.

The detention facility at Guantanamo was opened on January 11, 2002 to house suspected members of Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime and the al-Qaeda network.

Australian man David Hicks is still detained there, awaiting trial on charges that he helped al-Qaeda.

The Pentagon revealed last week, after wrapping up an investigation, that US military personnel at Guantanamo Bay once kicked the Koran and that a copy of the Islamic holy book was sprayed with urine in another incident, but that overall US soldiers at the camp handled the book with respect.

General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Monday said that closing Guantanamo would be difficult, since the majority of detainees being held there are considered too dangerous to be set free.

I have a better idea. Have Guantanamo close Carter's mouth.

Or better yet, have Carter incarcerated in Guantanamo. After all he loves the terrorists there who he calls "people" in there.

Carter never met an anti-American tin horn dictator, nor communist mobs or terrorist enemy guerillae he did not like!

I still can't believe that anyone in the US can believe anything this idiot says. His expert handling of the Iranian mullahs, North Koreans, Fidel Castro, Panama Canal, etc etc... will insure that his presidency was easily the most destructive to the US in this century. No wonder everyone in the rest of the world loves this creep.

Carter and the rest of the dems can`t shake the idea that if only Americans would stop being such bad people the rest of the world would treat us better.

Hard to believe someone who once had the national security reports and access to the most sensitive intelligence reports still will not recognize that we are the good guys in the world.

Hey Jimmy, remember when you threw the Shah on the dung pile, the Iranians responded to that with kindness did`nt they.

Over educated idiot is the term that comes to mind

I've got a question.

If our human rights abuses are so bad at Gitmo, why would we need to transfer prisoners to other countries to torture them?

While in College, I worked on the building of The Carter Center and because of what I heard and saw, I started to question my Liberal mindset. Jimmy Carter is one of the reasons I am now a Conservative. Jimmy Carter had the class and interpersonal skills of a drunk- Ted Kennedy comes to mind. I saw him micromanage and belittle folks when the situations didn't warrant it. President Carter and Howard Dean have many of the same characteristics and they truly speak for many Democrats.

He does seem like a very petty man, the type who carries grudges, etc.
