WASHINGTON -- President Bush on Wednesday left open the possibility that the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, could be shut down following mounting criticism from former President Carter and others.

"We're exploring all alternatives as to how best to do the main objective, which is to protect America," Bush said when asked in an interview with Fox News Channel's Neil Cavuto if he would close the detention center.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, however, said he did not know of anyone in the administration who was considering closing Guantanamo. He defended the military's operation of the camp.

What a fool.

Closing Gitmo would be the dumbest possible political maneuver for the President right now. The Democrats and the loony left would run around screaming "victory" for months on end. MoveOn.org would launch a giant celebration.

If Bush tarry's forth, he'll just be seen as caving in to the liberal media, the Democrats, and anti-war/pro-terrorist freaks.

"We're exploring all alternatives as to how best to do the main objective, which is to protect America,"

How in the hell did the AP get the headline from this statement?

You're calling the president a fool because the AP put words in his mouth?

Bush blows with the wind.

Considering the source of the article, I'd say AP is blowing smoke.

Remains to be seen whether this is, in fact, accurate. I'll reserve judgment until it's corroborated.

Having said that, I hope that this story is NOT accurate. I'm getting so sick and tired of Republicans wimping out.

Perhaps you should actually listen to the interview before you start labelling anyone, other than yourself, a fool!!

Per usual, AP took the President's comments out of context to advance their own agenda NOT his (the President's)!!

Why is the president starting to waver on these issues in the face of jihadis anf fifth columnists?

Great. Just great.

So I guess we are now letting the media and lefty moonbat protester types run how we will fight the war.

I have long thought that we weren't serious about winning this thing and now I am beginning to become more convinced that this is the case. Being in the military, it's pretty frustrating watching our leaders be so afraid of possibly offending the very bastards we are fighting.

Perception is reality.

The President- and his advisors- need to be very aware of what they say. If you even hint towards anything that sounds like a concession, you know what the media is going to do with it. That's exactly what happened here.

So yes, it was quite foolish.

Guess you didn't see his presser with Blair yesterday. Why hell, an AP reporter, probably the same dingbat who wrote this article asked President Bush if he was going to close Gitmo amid all the allegations of abuse, he said "No".
