In S.F., Dean calls GOP 'a white Christian party'

Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, unapologetic in the face of recent criticism that he has been too tough on his political opposition, said in San Francisco this week that Republicans are "pretty much a monolithic party. They all behave the same. They all look the same. It's pretty much a white Christian party."

Well, the odd thing here is, in Mobile, because our municipal elections are non-partisan, blacks have often back outright Republicans, and they back them because there's no party label affixed.

I remember in 1989, it was the first campaign I ever felt the need to get involved in, we were trying to re-elect incumbent Mayor Arthur Outlaw, a man who had served as chairman of the State Republican Party, in fact, one of the first converts to the party.

Mike Dow (who to this day, remains ambiguous in regards to party affiliation) was our opponent at the time

Basically, I accompanied one of the Outlaw people as they made the various runs to the black churches.

In 1989, Outlaw was defeated, we got beat bad (my opinion, considering Dow was a political novice), but Outlaw, who we all knew had run the State Republican Party, ended up winning something like 60-65% of the city's blacks.

To make a long story short, all of Outlaw's people ended up supporting Dow in 1993, and he's been mayor since.

The point I'm trying to make here is, it's not impossible for a known Republican to win the black vote (it's substantially easier if its a non-partisan election), but the fact is, the Republicans have to learn to start playing by the rules of the black political culture, and that means you have to reach out to the black church. If the Republicans would be willing to compete with the Democrats for the black church, I think we'd make some significant gains.

Yeah, but Brit Hume is a Power Line reader, as are many libs in the MSM as well as conservative radio hosts. That site and others have a lot of opinion making leverage. It and other blogs kick start stuff like this.

I hear that. I remember going to events at Michigan as an undergrad. I went to all kinds of things and often found myself the only 'person of color' there. So what? I was at school to expand my horizons.

I think I wound up a well-rounded person, they left school with the same perspective on the world as when they came in. I still meet people with that closed view of life. Sad.

I'm real, real sorry, that was thoughtless.....but it's not like I did anything really bad like posting one of the 5000 photos of First Lady Hillary wearing 'Old Crusty', her favorite black polyester pants suit that could stand up by itself.

And I certainly didn't repost that photo of her in the skimpy two-piece swim suit climbing up that yacht ladder with enough butt/thigh celluite showing to blind a seeing-eye dog.

That is what kills me. I grew up in Nebraska, and we have a higher percentage of minorities! Of course many are descendent's of Buffalo Soldiers, and are as crazy as the rest of us.
