Low-glycemic may be better than low-fat diet

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Foods with a low-glycemic index, which are digested relatively slowly and cause smaller increases in blood sugar, may protect the heart and blood vessels better than low-fat fare, according to the findings of a small study.

Researchers in Boston found that when obese people consumed as many carbohydrates with a low-glycemic index as they wanted, they lost just as much weight in 12 months as people who stuck with a conventional, calorie-restricted low-fat diet.

Carbohydrates with a low-glycemic index include foods such as nonstarchy vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and diary products, according to the report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dieters who watched their glycemic indices also experienced a larger decrease in fatty substances in the blood linked to heart disease and had a drop in levels of a protein that interferes with the body's ability to break down blood clots. In contrast, low-fat dieters had an increase in levels of the same protein, which may put them at higher risk of heart attack.

"Reducing (glycemic index) may be more effective than cutting back on fat over the long-term, both for weight loss and also for reducing risk of heart disease," study author Dr. David S. Ludwig told Reuters Health.

"Based on our results, and several dozen other clinical trials and epidemiological studies, I would recommend" eating foods with a low-glycemic index, added Ludwig, who is based at Children's Hospital.

The glycemic index measures how efficiently the body can metabolize carbohydrates. It ranks carbohydrates by how much a person's blood sugar rises immediately after eating, and tends to favor high-fiber foods that take longer to digest.

Ludwig and his team asked 23 obese young adults to follow either a low-fat diet or a diet in which they ate low-glycemic index foods for one year. As part of the low-glycemic index diet, people could eat as much as they wanted of foods with a low index, and got roughly 45 to 50 percent of calories from carbohydrates, and 30 to 35 percent from fat.

Low-fat dieters cut their daily intake by 250 to 500 calories, limited fat to less than 30 percent of their total calories, and got between 55 and 60 percent of calories from carbohydrates.

Ludwig noted that even though low-glycemic index dieters had no calorie limits, they likely didn't overeat because they felt less hunger after eating foods that take longer to digest.

"Numerous previous studies by our group and by others have shown that individuals feel less hunger and greater (sense of fullness) after low-glycemic index compared to high-glycemic index meals," he added.

I don't know about beer, but I've always had a weakness for Classic Coke. I can't drink diet soft drinks of any kind because they all taste like battery acid to me, but I've recently discovered a great alternative that's always been right under my nose: Carbonated water, be it club soda, seltzer, Perrier, etc. I like it with a twist of lime.

To me, the pleasure has always been the combination of the carbonation and the acidity, not the sweetness. I limited but could never elminate the Coke from my diet, until I discovered carbonated water.

I used to drink Michelob Ultra, but it was very light on taste. Miller Lite has just a smidgen more carbs (something like 2.7 vs 3.2), and has much more flavor, IMO.

Has anybody tried the Power 90 routine from Beach Body? I have heard it actually is a really good workout.

I definitely need to get with the program and exercise....and change my sugar-intensive, high fat diet.

I don't think I could deny myself so much as to not allow myself to have a friggin' sandwich, which I believe Atkins would make me do.

It goes to extremes.

Not trying to push Atkins, even though I found it to work. But I think you absolutely must use the recommended supplements. I did, and I did not experience that queasiness.

First, here is the standard health propaganda regarding this:
http://www.health-marketplace.com/p-Obesity-5.htm

But this article summarizes the truth nicely, and it is never talked about much on T.V.- remember: testes in and of themselves are not bad - it's what they make that the MSM hates, especially if it breaks the bona fide 'man' threshold.

Folks, here are a couple of old freeper threads regarding this too:

How Atkins and Ketostix "cured' Mrs. Gb's PCOS-based infertility...

Mrs Gb. did indeed get pregnant, four months after I posted this thread. The due date in fact is tomorrow.

Indeed Mr. Nov3, it is just amazing, and sickening, how the MSM plays with words to the disadvantage of men ... and women. Thanks for the thread.

But every once in awhile, I'd love to have a good, dark beer with dinner. Any ideas on how much is in just one bottle?

You are in luck. Why drink lo-carb piss water when you can have a good dark beer for almost the same calories and carbs? Check out Realbeer.com for all of this kind of information.

Guinness Draught is an excellent choice, with 125 calories and 10 carbs. It's better than any of the standard beers like Bud or Miller, and comparable to most light beers.

This is the ZONE Diet. The ZONE is much more careful about fat intake than Atkins or South Beach.

Barry Sears, the biochemist who originated the diet 20 yars ago has many good books out on the topic available from your library. The latest is The Anti-Inflammation Zone, which incorporates quite a lot of information on Omega Oils and also on the proper amount and type of Olive Oil to add to your diet to prevent and cure inflammation. It was absolutely astonishing to see how fast it worked. My dentist thinks it's saving my gums.

And weight falls off in The Zone. I'm never hungry. I did have to UP my carbs just a little to get maximum weight-loss, as I was not eating all the low-glycemic carbs Sears recommends.

For regular beer, the average is about one carb per ounce, i.e. 12 ounces = 12 carbs. Most light beers are half that, no matter how light and tasteless they are - always err on the side of taste.

BTW - rum - clear alcohol, no carbs. Don't believe me? Check the carb counter on the Atkins site. I did a double take the first time I saw the zeroes too!

Coconut rum is a poser. Coconut milk ranges about 8 carbs per 8 ounces - so you've got the same equivalance as beer. Enjoy accordingly.

And don't drive!

Would anyone else believe them? LOL

Wow - mazol tov! Wishing her a safe and easy delivery. Pregnancy, the only happy "fat" time in a woman's life. Hope she enjoyed it fully. (She can nurse away the pounds later! Breastfeeding is bar none the fastest way, happiest way to lose weight - if I was a wet nurse I'd be a size two)
