FBI questions Keene I.D. refusenik
Two FBI agents from the Boston division paid a visit to Russell Kanning's house in Keene today, about two weeks after he announced he would seek to board a Manchester airline flight with no I.D.
The 35-year-old libertarian activist wasn't home but rather cheerfully agreed to meet up with the agents at his workplace. Special Agents Phil Christiana and Mark Alford spent about an hour interviewing him around 2PM on Monday, June 6.
"They were really friendly," he says, "they obviously weren't there to arrest me...The thing they were most concerned about was whether I was actually going to stay non-violent." Kanning says the answer to that is "yes."
"There's nothing those guys can do to me at the airport that would make me use violence."
He says the agents seemed to relax somewhat and left after coming to the conclusion that he is not a physical threat and also that he cannot be deterred from his act of civil disobedience. They did spend time lecturing him on national security issues and told him "flying is not a right."
"My impression after talking to them is that the likelihood of them breaking into my house or doing something like that is small."
Kanning also told the agents he has not paid Income Taxes since '98. He moved to New Hampshire in November 2004 after joining the Free State Project, a libertarian movement seeking to accomplish "liberty in our lifetime" in New Hampshire.
And where did they get that idea?
It never ceases to amaze me how many people thing that unless something is specifically mentioned in the Constitution it is not a right.
Such a view is a gross misunderstanding of the Constitution, the purpose of which is to limit government, not to limit people.
Yeah, that was smart.
IMO, he was paid a visit in order to be intimidated.
Oh, good move, that.
Sang like a canary
Well, that's going to be fun. < /sarc>
Seems pretty keen on being arrested if you ask me.
But this is the kind of poor bozo the FBI goes after. What a waste of potential talent. They go after the easy hits, to get their conviction rate up. That is how they are measured, not the "quality" of the conviction, like a serial killer.
For years we did a pretty good job of keeping the Lunatics out of NH, they mainly settled in Vermont. Sigh.
If thats the case, I hope you have lots of free time. Youll need it for your career in jail.
Been there, done that.
The state (or the feds) dont have the AUTHORITY to (whatever) haha. Famous last words.
I used to know the menu of the Tyler, Hardin, and Jasper county jails. I still remember that Tuesday was free tater tot night at Sonic they provided dinner that day. Wednesday was Pizza Hut.
Oh and authority or not your butt is still locked up. Haha.
Live and learn. Or something.
He claims. Your eye is on the cookie and not the ball.
Everywhere Ive ever been, it is not a crime to not pay it is a crime to not FILE.
Pick your pissing games very carefully. Youll be pissing INTO it. Theyll be pissing OUT of it. Youll get real wet. They wont.
At least they are out there protesting and doing for what they believe in. Republicans need to follow their lead.
Of course, and it's great to see he wasn't and stood up to Big Government's attempt to do so.
We in WA today were just told by a judge that illegal voting can't be fixed, so it's ok. And the Republican candidate said it was ok as well, because he immediately rolled over and quit.
We'll see if anybody stands up to that.
I wonder if he's ever heard the phrase, "Good cop, bad cop."
The authorities are not your friends. Period. They're not necessarily your enemy, but they certainly are not your friends. They don't have to tell you the truth, either. They'll say or act how ever they think they need to in order to get what ever they're looking for. It pays not to forget that when dealing with the government."
Rossi can't win in court with the way the election contest law is worded, but we'll fix the Dem's little red wagon for them anyway. First by reforendum to repeal that odius gas tax, and second by kicking the bums out. After that, we're going to carve King county in half and reduce the power it has over the state. We just need to translate the anger over the election into grass roots effort.
