Salt Lake City -- Mark Hacking was sentenced Monday to six years to life in prison for the shooting death of his wife while she slept last July, bringing to a close a murder that shocked Utah and still hasn't been fully explained.
Judge Denise Lindberg listened to nearly two hours of emotional testimony before handing down the only sentence she could under Utah law.
Lindberg said only the parole board could determine how long Hacking will ultimately stay in prison, but that she will recommend that he be held "a very long time."

I don't get it. Why isn't it the death penalty?
Yeah, and I blow (literally) more snacks that way!
Lori had told some friends that she was pregnant, but there was no official record of it and her remains were in such bad shape that the police couldn't prove it. So prosecutors weren't able to charge him with killing the baby.
Lori Hacking pinglist--please note: this is likely the last ping, so I will be taking the list off my home page.
My comment--6 years to life seems awfully lenient, considering what he did. I'm not sure justice is served here.
I still don't get it. Why is the sentence for murder 6 years to life? Who agreed to that? And what will they do with him after six years? Wait for him to kill someone else for no reason?
If I was Lori's Daddy I'd be waiting outside the gates of the Pen for his release, fully locked and loaded.
I have to agree with you 100%. They should execute him pronto.
I suspect that the parole board won't even talk to him for 6 years, at a minimum. In about 15 years, they'll deny his parole. In about 30, they'll consider it. In about 50, he may see daylight. If he lives that long...
I really hope you're right. This just doesn't seem very "just" to me--he killed his wife and unborn son, and let the family agonize over her "disappearance" for a very long time. He's a liar and a murderer who's ruined the lives he didn't kill outright. In my opinion, he should have gotten the death sentence.
**Any bets on how many marriage proposals this scum has already received?
Why?
Who gets to say who is on the Parole Board?
Bill Clinton is missing his calling, but I am sure that whatever Jurisdiction that Billy finds himself in trouble, that he has stacked many appointments in his favor. As Sick as he looks it may have been a complete waste of time.
"Mark Hacking gave emotional testimony, admitted to killing Lori and his unborn baby. "
The pregnancy couldn't be confirmed.
Therefore, he couldn't be charged for that.
Too, supposedly she was only 5 weeks pregnant and it wasn't "viable." (I have a problem with the viable tag.)
Unlike Conner Peterson. He was very viable.
Utah may be the most conservative state in the country. But strange yes.
Thanks for all the pings , but please ping me in 6 years when his parole is turned down.
You might save it a few years. It sounds like it won't be very long until he gets out.
"Unlike Conner Peterson. He was very viable."
And, That STILL Makes me ILL...
Several years back 1985? I think it was. Most states or all states under Federal mandate, (I think) established sentencing guidelines, because there was such a varience by Judges in sentencing for the same crime given out to different people.
Under the Utah guideline the Judge could only give 6 to life. After six years the parole board will decide if he gets paroled or not. The parole board could continue denying parole for the rest of his life.
I am not real positive I am correct in all of this, but I am pretty sure I am close to correct. ;-)
Been a while since I was in Utah, but I believe the legislature appoints the parole board, and they ain't liberal by any stretch. Previous guests have included Gary Gilmore, Pierre Dale Selby, and Joe Hill.
I would add "failed presidential candidate from a small, inconsequential state, John F. Kerry."
