Salt Lake City -- Mark Hacking was sentenced Monday to six years to life in prison for the shooting death of his wife while she slept last July, bringing to a close a murder that shocked Utah and still hasn't been fully explained.

Judge Denise Lindberg listened to nearly two hours of emotional testimony before handing down the only sentence she could under Utah law.

Lindberg said only the parole board could determine how long Hacking will ultimately stay in prison, but that she will recommend that he be held "a very long time."

Utah law needs some serious re-examination.

I don't get the sentencing up there. What's with the broad range in time? Six years to life? Maybe another inmate will kill him in four and it'll be a moot point.

6 years to life. Now that is an odd sentence.

Good grief. I guess we have to have faith in the Utah parole board now. It's worked so far for Manson and his "family".

Maybe they can still try him for killing his child?

I agree with 4%-98% of Utah's sentencing decisions.

Lori Hacking was pregnant?

Laci Peterson was, but I hadn't heard Lori was as well.

Maybe 6 years to LIVE would be better. GAWD, what horrible sentencing.

Utah law needs some serious re-examination.

No joke. The court should determine the punishment, not the parole board.

He should always be referred to as the 'unfortunately-named Mark Hacking.'

Not the law, Utah itself. Very strange state.

Similarly - Sen. Kerry should always be referred to as "failed presidential candidate John F. Kerry".

Maybe they think that 6 years IS a life sentence.
