Noted French left-wing activist Thierry Meyssan's 9/11 conspiracy book, L'Effroyable Imposture, became a best-seller in 2002.
But I never imagined such an "appalling deception" would ever find a voice in America. At a recent public lecture I was buttonholed by a Michael Moorewannabe filmmaker who breathlessly explained that 9/11 was orchestrated by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Central Intelligence Agency as part of their plan for global domination and a New World Order. That goal was to be financed by G.O.D. (Gold, Oil, Drugs) and launched by a Pearl Harborlike attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, thereby providing the justification for war.
The evidence was there in the details, he explained, handing me a faux dollar bill (with "9-11" replacing the "1," a picture of Bush supplanting that of Washington) chockablock with Web sites.
In fact, if you type "World Trade Center" and "conspiracy" into Google, you'll get more than 250,000 hits. From these sites, you will discover that some people think the Pentagon was hit by a missile; that U.S. Air Force jets were ordered to "stand down" and not intercept Flights 11 and 175, the ones that struck the twin towers; that the towers themselves were razed by demolition explosives timed to go off soon after the impact of the planes; that a mysterious white jet shot down Flight 93 over Pennsylvania; and that New York Jews were ordered to stay home that day (Zionists and other pro-Israeli factions, of course, were involved). Books also abound, including Inside Job, by Jim Marrs; The New Pearl Harbor, by David Ray Griffin; and 9/11: The Great Illusion, by George Humphrey. The single best debunking of this conspiratorial codswallop is in the March issue of Popular Mechanics, which provides an exhaustive point-by-point analysis of the most prevalent claims.
The mistaken belief that a handful of unexplained anomalies can undermine a well-established theory lies at the heart of all conspiratorial thinking (as well as creationism, Holocaust denial and the various crank theories of physics). All the "evidence" for a 9/11 conspiracy falls under the rubric of this fallacy. Such notions are easily refuted by noting that scientific theories are not built on single facts alone but on a convergence of evidence assembled from multiple lines of inquiry.
No melted steel, no collapsed towers.
For example, according to www.911research.wtc7.net, steel melts at a temperature of 2,777 degrees Fahrenheit, but jet fuel burns at only 1,517 degrees F. No melted steel, no collapsed towers. "The planes did not bring those towers down; bombs did," says www.abovetopsecret.com. Wrong.
In an article in the Journal of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society and in subsequent interviews, Thomas Eagar, an engineering professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explains why: steel loses 50 percent of its strength at 1,200 degrees F; 90,000 liters of jet fuel ignited other combustible materials such as rugs, curtains, furniture and paper, which continued burning after the jet fuel was exhausted, raising temperatures above 1,400 degrees F and spreading the inferno throughout each building. Temperature differentials of hundreds of degrees across single steel horizontal trusses caused them to sag--straining and then breaking the angle clips that held the beams to the vertical columns. Once one truss failed, others followed. When one floor collapsed onto the next floor below, that floor subsequently gave way, creating a pancaking effect that triggered each 500,000-ton structure to crumble. Conspiricists argue that the buildings should have fallen over on their sides, but with 95 percent of each building consisting of air, they could only have collapsed straight down.
All the 9/11 conspiracy claims are this easily refuted. On the Pentagon "missile strike," for example, I queried the would-be filmmaker about what happened to Flight 77, which disappeared at the same time. "The plane was destroyed, and the passengers were murdered by Bush operatives," he solemnly revealed. "Do you mean to tell me that not one of the thousands of conspirators needed to pull all this off," I retorted, "is a whistle-blower who would go on TV or write a tell-all book?"
My rejoinder was met with the same grim response I get from UFOlogists when I ask them for concrete evidence: Men in Black silence witnesses, and dead men tell no tales.
There are people on the right who believe these crazy, whacked out theories about 9/11. I know one of them. Try as I might, that person will not be convinced otherwise! This nonsense drives me crazy!!!!!
LOL! Other than Pepsi's far superior taste, I always knew there were other reasons to like Pepsi better than Coke.
(And before anyone misconstrues my comment above, I well understand your scenario is fiction.)
When the planes hit the WTC towers, they pushed through the building.
No such thing hapend at the pentagon.
As a matter of fact, no wings were found at the pentagon at all.
And if you seen the photos of the impact zone at the pentagon, the area had no wings anywhere...we were told they vaporized because of the intense heat.
Except they found superhuman body parts that survived this intense heat and made it possible to identify people who hijacked the plane. And they said they found bodies of the hijack victims. Amazing that a 757 can vaporize but the bodies and parts of bodies remain.
And in a related story, Superman was seen inside the wreckage protecting the bodies so the extreme heat that was generated by Jet A burning at temperatures exceeding the temperature of the sun which instnatly vaporized the aircraft and its engines.
And the hijackers just happend to know that the part of the pentagon that was empty would be the perfect place to attack the pentagon.
No damage is apparent in the photos of the pentagon after the strike.
No damage to the lawn, no damage to upper parts of the structure where the tail would have hit.
Comments made by personell at the pentagon......"I smelled cordite...someone had set off an explosive."
Comments by CNN reporter...."No evidence of a plane crashing into the pentagon."
That sums up perfectly your assinine theories and what happened on 9-11.
Well I have not made up my mind one way or another about what happened at the Pentagon but about the wings.
When you saw the fireball at the WTC what was the source? Jet Fuel, where is jet fuel stored in a plane? the Wings. How much strength does lightweight aluminum wings have when subject to internal explosion? Other than the Engines there won't be much left of the wings in anycase.
As for humans not vaporizing from the burning jet fuel. Much of the cabin will hit the building before the wings and will be forward of the mass of jet fuel therefore bodies will survive. There is reasons why there is almost always bodies recovered from plane crashes. Then there is the nature of fire itself, ask any firefighter and he will tell you that fire can do freaky things, burn hotter than hell in one area yet never ignite paper a foot away. You will have hot spots where jet fuel pools and cool spots where lack of fuel or air won't support combustion.
Aircraft engines is more important evidence, we recovered engines at the WTC (actually several blocks away) and if a two engine plane struck the Pentagon then two holes should be in the building at least one ring back from the front ring and engines should be recovered since they will survive most fires.
Like I say I really don't know what to believe but if there was engines there and was the right type for the type of air plane then unless planted an aircraft struck the building, if no engines then something else happened there.
Source, please?
So the whole Cherkoff family is in on it? Who else????
False. Wing members, shredded skin, spars, and other small, dense parts of the wings survived and were found inside the Pentagon. Parts of both Wing mounted engines, especially the machines steel parts, were found inside the building.
When the planes hit the WTC towers, they pushed through the building. No such thing hapend at the pentagon.
The curtainwall of the WTC was made of aluminum, thin steel members, and glass, no more than inches thick. The wall of the Pentagon was made of steel reinforced concrete with the windows made of 4" blastproof polycarbonate plastic. The two barriers are in no way comparable.
As a matter of fact, no wings were found at the pentagon at all.
False. See above.
And if you seen the photos of the impact zone at the pentagon, the area had no wings anywhere...we were told they vaporized because of the intense heat.
You are quoting what was never said. While some parts of the plane's aluminum did melt, many parts of the wings, as stated above were found and recovered. The fuel tanks are primarily in the wings... but the shattering of the wings spread the fuel throughout the building. The impact of the aircraft on a mass that could be described as "immovable" did far more damage to the aircraft than did the fire.
Except they found superhuman body parts that survived this intense heat and made it possible to identify people who hijacked the plane. And they said they found bodies of the hijack victims.
And some Pentagon employees survived from within the middle of the conflagration. They did not find all of the bodies... but they did find pieces of many that were identified by DNA.
. . . extreme heat that was generated by Jet A burning at temperatures exceeding the temperature of the sun which instnatly vaporized the aircraft and its engines.
Exactly where did you study physics? The temperature of the sun is about 10,000º F at the surface and 28,000,000º F in the core and 1,800,000º - 3,600,000º F in the corona... Civil Engineering Magazine, in a report on the damage to the Pentagon, estimated the fire "may have reached 1740º F (950º C)" at its hottest based on observed damage to internal columns and other structures. Aluminum WILL melt at 933º C (1711º F), but it will not vaporize.I am absolutely certain that you will ignore these facts just as you have ignored all the other facts so that you can believe the worst of our government.
That said, I think that TWA flight 800 was shot down by a missile... because that is where the evidence and science takes me. I think that a Boeing 757 crashed into the side of the Pentagon because that is where the evidence and science takes me, as well.
Are you implying that bodies can't be recovered after a plane crash?
Source, please?
You can't be serious, Thats Crazy Talk, See a Doctor ASAP!
Debris spread over the lawn in front of the Pentagon. Note the crumpled skin of an aircraft matching the paint scheme of American Airlines. It appears to come from the area of the fuselage with the name of the airlines.
"On a Metro train to National Airport, Allen Cleveland looked out the window to see a jet heading down toward the Pentagon. 'I thought, "There's no landing strip on that side of the subway tracks,"' he said. Before he could process that thought, he saw 'a huge mushroom cloud. The lady next to me was in absolute hysterics.'"

Washington Post, 12 Sep 2001"I was supposed to have been going to the Pentagon Tuesday morning at about 11:00am (EDT) and was getting ready, and thank goodness I wasn't going to be going until later. It was so shocking, I was listening to the news on what had happened in New York, and just happened to look out the window because I heard a low flying plane and then I saw it hit the Pentagon. It happened so fast... it was in the air one moment and in the building the next..."

BBC News, 14 Sep 2001"As I approached the Pentagon, which was still not quite in view, listening on the radio to the first reports about the World Trade Center disaster in New York, a jetliner, apparently at full throttle and not more than a couple of hundred yards above the ground, screamed overhead. ... Seconds before the Pentagon came into view a huge black cloud of smoke rose above the road ahead. I came around the bend and there was the Pentagon billowing smoke, flames and debris, blackened on one side and with a gaping hole where the airplane had hit it."

Human Events, 17 Sep 2001"Frank Probst, an information management specialist for the Pentagon Renovation Program, left his office trailer near the Pentagon's south parking lot at 9:36 a.m. Sept. 11. Walking north beside Route 27, he suddenly saw a commercial airliner crest the hilltop Navy Annex. American Airlines Flight 77 reached him so fast and flew so low that Probst dropped to the ground, fearing he'd lose his head to its right engine."
- "A Defiant Recovery." The Retired Officer Magazine, January 2002"USAToday.com Editor Joel Sucherman saw it all: an American Airlines jetliner fly left to right across his field of vision as he commuted to work Tuesday morning. It was highly unusual. The large plane was 20 feet off the ground and a mere 50 to 75 yards from his windshield. Two seconds later and before he could see if the landing gear was down or any of the horror-struck faces inside, the plane slammed into the west wall of the Pentagon 100 yards away. 'My first thought was he's not going to make it across the river to [Reagan] National Airport. But whoever was flying the plane made no attempt to change direction,' Sucherman said. 'It was coming in at a high rate of speed, but not at a steep anglealmost like a heat-seeking missile was locked onto its target and staying dead on course.'"
- "Journalist Witnesses Pentagon Crash." eWeek.com, 13 Sep 2001"'I mean it was like a cruise missile with wings, went right there and slammed into the Pentagon,' eyewitness Mike Walter said of the plane that hit the military complex. 'Huge explosion, great ball of fire, smoke started billowing out, and then it was just chaos on the highway as people either tried to move around the traffic and go down either forward or backwards,' he said."

- "September 11 Remembered." University Week, 4 Oct 2001"Father Stephen McGraw was driving to a graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery the morning of Sept. 11, when he mistakenly took the Pentagon exit onto Washington Boulevard, putting him in a position to witness American Airlines Flight 77 crash into the Pentagon. 'I was in the left hand lane with my windows closed. I did not hear anything at all until the plane was just right above our cars.' McGraw estimates that the plane passed about 20 feet over his car, as he waited in the left hand lane of the road, on the side closest to the Pentagon. 'The plane clipped the top of a light pole just before it got to us, injuring a taxi driver, whose taxi was just a few feet away from my car. I saw it crash into the building,' he said. 'My only memories really were that it looked like a plane coming in for a landing. I mean in the sense that it was controlled and sort of straight. That was my impression,' he said. 'There was an explosion and a loud noise and I felt the impact. I remember seeing a fireball come out of two windows (of the Pentagon). I saw an explosion of fire billowing through those two windows.'"

Shortly after watching the second tragedy, I heard jet engines pass our building, which, being so close to the airport is very common. But I thought the airport was closed. I figured it was a plane coming in for landing. A few moments later, as I was looking down at my desk, the plane caught my eye. It didn't register at first. I thought to myself that I couldn't believe the pilot was flying so low. Then it dawned on me what was about to happen. I watched in horror as the plane flew at treetop level, banked slightly to the left, drug it's wing along the ground and slammed into the west wall of the Pentagon exploding into a giant orange fireball. Then black smoke. Then white smoke."

'I was going up 395, up Washington Blvd., listening to the the news, to WTOP, and from my left side-I don't know whether I saw or heard it first- I saw a silver plane I immediately recognized it as an American Airlines jet,' said the 25-year-old O'Keefe, managing editor of Influence, an American Lawyer Media publication about lobbying. 'It came swooping in over the highway, over my left shoulder, straight across where my car was heading. I'd just heard them saying on the radio that National Airport was closing, and I thought, "That's not going to make it to National Airport." "He is a cousin of Michael Chertoff, the new Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security." Which refutes which of his claims?
Are you resorting to the logical fallacy of ad hominum
because you are unable to refute the evidence? If not, when might you present us with your point by point refutation of Mr. Chertoff's article?
hmm, interesting post swordmaker. I hope that radioactive responds with a refutation of the evidence that you have provided.
It is very hard to refute facts backed up with evidence...
That's why it's so easy to refute Radioactive... he has no evidence.
Oh, I know. I was just encouraging him to respond.
