Curvier women 'will live longer'
|

Institute of Preventative Medicine in Copenhagen researchers found those with wider hips also appeared to be protected against heart conditions. Women with a hip measurement smaller than 40 inches, or a size 14 would not have this protection, they said. The researchers say hip fat contains a beneficial natural anti-inflammatory. Narrow hips 'detrimental' They said this anti-inflammatory, called adiponectin, prevents arteries swelling up and becoming blocked.
The hourglass figure has been made famous by women ranging from Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren to Kelly Brook and Catherine Zeta Jones today. The Danish researchers examined almost 3,000 men and women aged between 35 and 65 from 1987 to 1988 They measured height, weight and body mass index - calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. They then looked at Danish health registers up until the end of 1998 to look at how many of the men and women had cardiovascular problems, and up to 2001 to see how many had died. Compared to the group of women with the smallest hip circumferences, women with the biggest were found to have an 87% reduction in deaths. They also had an 86% reduced risk of having coronary heart disease and a 46% reduction in the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, according to the researchers. Previous studies have found both men and women with small hips are at an increased risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure and gall bladder disease. However the study, which has been published in Obesity Research, found a wider hip circumference was not linked with better heart health in men. 'Apple-shape' risk Professor Berit Heitmann, who led the study, said: "It seems that the protection is not a matter of wide hips, it's the detrimental effect of narrow hips with a lack of muscle fat, or bone or a combination of both. She added: "Fat on hips is different than fat on the abdomen. If you do not have enough of this fat you may risk heart attacks." Carrying excess fat around the stomach, being 'apple shaped', is already known to be potentially damaging to health. Fat cells in this part of the body pump out chemicals that can damage the insulin system, raising the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Belinda Linden, of the British Heart Foundation said: "It has been widely reported that if you are apple-shaped, your risk of developing cardiovascular disease is likely to be greater than if you are pear-shaped. "This study provides additional evidence of the association between hip circumference and cardiovascular protection among women." But she added: "It is important to consider both your body weight and shape in tandem. Controlling both by eating less and being more active is the best way to reduce your risk of heart and circulatory disease." |
Agreed! Nothing more sexy than a woman who fills out a dress nicely in the hips and bust area and has those curves.
the stick figure look is just nasty.
Aw yes, but that is the point you see. Who do you think are the arbitors of style and fashion? Why gay men of course and their ideal is the hairless 12 year old boy, hence the Allie McBeal look.
As for me I like my women round. As someone earlier said built for comfort.
WHOOPIE for hips!
(Where was that opinion when I was a teen, and Twiggy was infecting the minds of the teen boys????)
Built to last...according to a t-shirt I wore in my 20's.
"The other 11 were obese from mildly to double normal body weight.
Folks are sure eating a lot in Middle Tennessee."
All that fried chicken/okra/greentomatos/hushpuppies/catfish/etc. has to go somewhere. ;o)
Seriously, they may not be eating a lot.
It could be what they are eating, though.
Or, depending on their age, it could be hormonal.
Now that I have your attention, I'd like to say something in defense of petite women.*
Just because we are small, and lightweights, does not mean we aren't curvy or leggy.
I may be only 5'3", but I have long legs.
And, you can't see my rib cage.
In fact, I have none of that Twiggy/Lindsey/Nicole thing going on.
I just happen to be small, as your beautiful wife is.
*This is not directed at you.
But, you knew that. ;o)
:)
My friends tell me the same thing that yours do. My doctor said I don't have to get concerned until I hit 160 or so but this is the biggest I've ever been and I have a hard time dealing with it. My belly is still flat so I guess I should get used to the idea. I'm 50 now. I only weighed 127lbs the day I had my daughter (before she was born) and she weighed 8lbs. LOL I'm probably healthier at 135 but it came on so fast that I can't adjust to it.
I had my physical the other day and the cholesterol was good and my BP was only 117/70 so it's apparently not hurting me. My Mom looks much older when she looses weight too. She's 5'3" and looks good at 130 to 135.
well she isn't very tall, so my guess is around 150 lbs or so....
Thats funny. Sounds like me too. I weighed 128 lbs and am 5'5, but held that same weight for 15 yrs, till my husband died. Then I lost 12 and then gained back 15. I dont care though at 132 I'm not fat or skinny, but do carry a lot of it on the hips!
Well, all the regular people I know (women) are just as confused as I am. I am single, and the men that I have dated want thin women. Young, too. That is why I am still single after 4 years of widowhood I guess.
I like MORE magazine. It is for women over 40. They are a lot more realistic. The women are beautiful without being fake and starved. All of the models are 40 or over and everyone they interview is 40 or over. Some are just having babies and some are grandmothers. Some are just starting careers and some are going off to enjoy a new beginning. Some are dating and some are married. Etc., Etc. ;)
You mean there are 500 year old women running around over there?
I am 30. I am a bodybuilder, etc etc. A woman in the gym started to have conversations with me, I figured she was about 40, and very attractive and sexy. The younger chicks had nothing on this woman. I came to find out she was actually 47. In my eyes, this woman was definately great looking and had it going on.
Its all about how you carry yourself.
I think the trend toward the anoerexic little boy look in women corresponds with the ascension of more open homosexual influence in Hollyweird. Look at the women that were the studio ideal in the '50's when aggresively hetero males were studio heads. Gardner, Monroe, Loren, Mansfield, etc were both statuesque and curvy.
I think that the old ideal is coming back. Look at the new crop like Beyonce, Lopez, Spears, Berry. Women that actually look like WOMEN. Thank God for it!!!
"The researchers say hip fat contains a beneficial natural anti-inflammatory.
Narrow hips 'detrimental'
They said this anti-inflammatory, called adiponectin, prevents arteries swelling up and becoming blocked."
I don't recall getting a ping from you about this -- I think it qualifies for your health pings.
(If you pinged your list and I missed, sorry)
I bet you made her day! ;) That is a very nice thing to say.
Threads like this make thicker gals feel better! ..Good for them!
I hope so. For a long time she thinks she is a bit to thick. I think she looks great. She also has a bit of muscle on her as she works out and plays ice hockey. I guess she's what you would call a touch chick, That's pefect with me though. I don't like the little flower thing.
Are we talking about the 47 year old woman?
No my girlfriend. I would never cheat on her. This woman who started talking to me in the gym looked very very good, for any age. I told her I had a girlfriend, etc etc.
