Vanilla Ice stole it, said he didn't, and refused to give credit (i.e., license cash) to Mercury and Queen.
He was sued, he presented his riff as being slightly different, and that was his defense.

He was made a money-grubbing fool, lost his lawsuit, and had to credit Queen and Bowie. Nothing honorable about it, actually.

As a former MTV junkie (when they first hit the scene and actually played videos), Take on Me was and is my #1 favorite music video.

Duran Duran videos got on my nerves.

Hubby and I are big Pixies fans. We saw them at Pat's in the Flats in Cleveland in the 80s.

How did the lead singer for the Waitresses die? That's a bummer--I really liked their album.

Ace - How Long (has this been going on)

That was 70s, I believe.

BTW what's great about that song is what's great about "Tempted" by the Squeeze, and "Silent Running" by Mike and the Mechanics. Do you know what it is?

Paul Carrack. The greatest least known singer in the history of rock.

..Also, favorite Metallica release is "Ride the Lightning".

Careful there, you realize that you're advertising anti-death penalty song in Free Republic? ;-)

Where's Animotion? They had nothing after "Obsession" right?

No hits that I can think of. I do have another song of theirs, "Room to Move," which I thought was good, though it doesn't equal "Obession."

•"Heat of the Moment" by Asia

•Peter Schilling's "Major Tom (Coming Home)"

Same here - a really cool video and ground-breaking for its time.

The mid-eighties were a wonderful time for me - I'd just gotten married, had my own place and used to watch MTV constantly (they were actually worth watching then.)

Oh yeah, and the best thing about that time - Reagan was President!

I agree, I've got it on DVD. Funny seeing Grissom from CSI looking so young. Not mention the 'moment' towards the end. Willem Defoe was awesome as well.

He got black listed by rappers for not being from the ghetto and of course for being a white guy doing rap.

plus he wasn't honest about his background... he tried to say he was ghetto... but really, with a name like Van Winkle, how ghetto can you be? and he lied about the track to Ice, Ice Baby... everyone knew it was "Under Pressure" (great song) but Vanilla said it wasn't "exactly" the same... that was just silly...

i loved Jim Carey's impersonation of him on "In Living Color."

But Vanilla Ice did it (almost) first, and did it very badly.

he wasn't almost first... heck, ten years before The Sugar Hill Gang did with Chic's "Good Times" in "Rapper's Delight." it wasn't that Vanilla did it badly, it was that he tried to say he didn't use "Under Pressure," when, of course, he did...
