The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite the massive federal, state and local law enforcement effort to stop terrorists from entering the United States, there is no strong evidence of how well it is working.

Many experts are concerned that there are plenty of terrorists or sympathizers already in the country who have been here for years. Some are even citizens.

The Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers were the first wave and now the increasing number of arrests seems to signal a second wave of terrorism in South Florida.

Just to note, at the time there were even jihadis who weren't sure this was really Zarqawi - but it was also right around the same time that we were hearing he had been injured/died etc so that may be why.

Still cant say for sure. Netanyahu was warned but there is question as to who warned him. Some say mossad and some say British police????? Some say Israel warned the British some time before it happened. But you know how some feel about Israel so I am not putting much stock in it.

It is real hard to separate fact from fiction at this point. Sharon was going to fire Netanyahu next week for some vote he wouldn't make.

Possibly. Those who have been on the TM since last summer should remember the Abu Hafs brigade quite well. They were intricately involved in the repeated warnings to Italy, that seemed to be backed up by Italian actions... then, nothing happened. Interestingly enough, it was right around this time last summer. It is interesting that they would issue a warning within 60 days of an attack in Europe, but I remember there was much mystery involving them last yr (even down to - was it one person pretending to be a terror group). If I recall correctly, penguino was the one who found an image on Italian on a site, then posted here... before the threat became 'public knowledge.'

In the name of Allah the compassionate, the merciful
That Allah may be exalted...

This is an ultimatum to the Italian people. Either get rid of Berlusconi, the Incapable, or -specifically- we will burn Italy. This is a clear equation. We're indicating, to clear our conscience at this point, that you have been warned. After this, the next message you will see on your earth - you won't be reading it on an Internet site.

Berlusconi promises you only blood and total slavery to the United States...I remind you again of the great Italian journalist Antonio Rosso who was killed by Putin's secret service because he shared in the suffering of our brothers in Chechnya where he was welcome. Berlusconi has not lifted a finger to ask for an open investigation into that murder.

Don't let yourselves be fooled by the media that controls and directs Berlusconi. And try to learn the objective facts. We are not bloodthirsty animals or stupid fanatics like we are described in Berlusconi's media. I am sure that the media of Berlusconi will say this is a message of pure threat and that we will kill Fouad Allam, or another deficient view - they are trying to trick you by saying Fouad Allam and his cohorts represent the true Islam, peaceful and that refuses violence...

Don't let yourselves be fooled. Free yourselves from the superiority complex typical of the West with respect to the Muslim world. Know that the so-called moderate government is your worst enemies and that Islam answers violence with a violence proportionate to preserving our dignity and that which prohibits us from turning the other cheek.

Statement Threatens Attacks Vs. Italy

CAIRO, Egypt - A statement purportedly written by an al-Qaida-linked group threatened to launch attacks on Italian soil if Premier Silvio Berlusconi remains in office.

The statement, signed by the Brigades of Abu Hafs al-Masri and posted Friday on an Internet site known for carrying extremist Islamic content, follows the expiration of a three-month offer of a terrorism truce purportedly made by Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) to European states, including Italy.

"Either you get rid of the inefficient Berlusconi, or we will really burn Italy," the undated statement said, adding, "Berlusconi is dragging you into more blood plus absolute slavery to America."

There was no way to verify the authenticity of the statement.

Second Threat (July 26th, 2004):

Terror Group Warns Italy to Pull Troops

CAIRO, Egypt -- Al-Qaida-linked Islamic militants on Monday threatened to "shake the earth" everywhere in Italy if Rome does not withdraw troops from Iraq.

The Internet statement attributed to the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, the second such threat against the government of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in two weeks, was post on a Web site known from carrying materials from Islamic militants.

"This is a warning and a threat to the Italian government, which devoted itself to serving the criminal American crusade, to follow suit with those who preceded you and leave the land of Iraq," the statement said. "Otherwise, we will change our correspondence into words of blood and shake the earth everywhere in your (lands)."

"To the despicable Italian prime minister: If you have not heard this threat, then we will make you hear it in Rome, in every place and under the feet of your people, with Allah's will. We give you, Berlusconi, a few days only, then you will see things that displease you," it said.

The Italian government had no immediate comment. In the past, it has ignored such threats. There was no way to verify the authenticity of the statement.

Terror Threat to Europe

Muslim militants claiming links with al Qaeda have vowed a "bloody war on Europe" after a truce offered by Osama bin Laden expired earlier this month.

They also said that Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would be their first target for attack.

In a statement posted on an Islamist website, the group said:

"We will shake the cities of Europe and we will start with you Berlusconi, and we will make it bloody until you return to the correct path.

"Wait for us Berlusconi and your other allies as well, wait for our promise which we have revealed to you and are now revealing to Europe."

In a general sense, these threats (moreso to Europe than Italy) from last summer would match the threats we got from bin Laden prior to 9/11. After his fatwa in 1998, he made several warnings (some televised) of his intent to bring hell to our country. In the west, we take threats as meaning 'this will happen tomorrow, or next week' but these guys have repeatedly shown us that a threat made one day might not be followed up by action for a yr, or more.

I was reading the WSJ at lunch...several things of note. They said that the UK authorities did have to detonate some of the unexploded devices in case they were boobytraps....

and two

Governor Pataki signed "emergency orders" to allow CT and NJ state police officers arrest powers on trains heading into NYC.

It produces high casualities and terror while the target enviromnent provides concealment to the bombers. This shift in tactics away from car bombs to trains suggests that this may be the method used in a future attack here in the US and Europe.

ExSoldier checking in from north Florida on a dial up connection and a primitive computer and still on vacation....but this is my take on the above: According to the MSM in UK today, that stiff upper lip of the British is prominent. Ridership on the tube seems to be slightly off, but most folks seem to be taking a long weekend. I think it may bee business as usual on Monday. If that's so, then the desired effect may not be so great. True it's possible that the UK is a bit used to bombs since the IRA seems to set them off at times and the typical American sheep may bleat a bit more stridently! But it seems to me that it's got to be bigger than 911 or at least far more widespread. Comments on this (no pun intended) train of thought?
