Freeper research wanted: Can we estimate Felt's FBI pension? Is he being abused by his daughter?
one man's opinion

Posted on 06/02/2005 11:18:04 AM PDT by ken5050

Much has been written about the need and desire of Felt's family to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame. I have no problem with this, but we're also hearing about how he is living in a converted garage at his daughter's house, and that she has taken care of him for 20 years. Before designating her for sainthood. I 'd like to point out that he has been receiving a federal pension all this time, and he retired at the top of the federal pay system I know very little about the federal system, but assume there are many here who can estimate what his salary was at the time he retired, and what his pension is, even assuming that he elected a reduced benefit option to provide a survivor benefitfor his wife.

My family made sure my grandparents stayed at home until they day they died. It was not easy. It took a toll on everyone. There were days the resentment flowed.

But we loved them.

None of us did it for the hope of it being "worth something."

We did it out of love. And when they died within a few weeks of each other, We all could hold our heads high. Not one of us said "Do we get anything for our time and trouble?"

No, we would have taken them both back in a heartbeat.

EXACTLY!!! Not "cash-in." We did the same with my grandfather.

But he said the word was,

antiDISestablishmentarianism.

If Felt suffers from some level of dementia as has been reported, it may be legal, but not right to manipulate/cajole/pressure him to make a decision he may not make otherwise.

Not eveyone in my family thinks the way I do. There were one or 2 who would hit my grandparents up for a "loan." They were successful until my mother & aunt caught on. The wrath of the daughters would fall hard & fall quick.

I believe in capitalism, don't get me wrong. But as much as I detest them, W & B are reaping the rewards of capitalism. There was no agreement with Felt, except to keep a secret. So the daughter did not think it was fair W & B got all the money? Well, life is not fair.

If Felt has full control of his facilties, fine...his life, his decision.

But if reports are true, he never wanted to go public with this and had to be "convinced" by his family after suffering a series of stroke and having diminshed mental capacity reeks of taking advantage of the elderly for financial gain. I consider that a form of abuse.

Please do not misunderstand. I am not taking up for any of them. I hold none of them in high regard. But the daughter holds the "no class" prize, IMHO.

People change. There's no reason to believe that this was not Mr. Felt's decision.

I understand what you are saying.....I am saying that IF reports are true, IF he is suffering some sort of dementia, IF his family had to work hard to change his mind AFTER he suffered his strokes which resulted in diminished capacity then the case can be made that his family took advantage of Grandpa's situation for financial gain.

I have heard conflicting reports, so it is hard to know for sure. One report said he was anguished because he revered Nixon. Another said he was bitter because he had been passed over for Hoover's position. Yet another story has him as the source for the information which brought down Agnew.

I guess time will tell. Right now I am judging her on my perceptions of her actions and words and most importantly what I would do in this situation. It may be wrong and unfair. But hey, I am human. What can I say?

You are right, I had an old lady - late night moment. ;-)

Spelling the word was the game. Where did it come from? Now we call that a 'meme,' yes?

on another thread

His daughter is a gold digging Pelosi faced opportunist.

When Daddy dies, who will pay to get the work done? Her face job is stretched pretty tight but in a few years she will need another and if Daddy is gone, as he certainly will be, there needs to be some coins. We know fron Nip and Tuck..... plastic surgeons are expensive

Unless her minor children are actually grandpa's kids.

Like I pointed out earlier, no one really knows what those people in California are up to these days.

It's a grimace. Lots of women do that when under stress. People who make these announcements ("I'm Deep Throat", for example) probably never expected the amount of public interest that shows up at their front door.

Maybe Felt's daughter (who undoubtedly has whole gushers of compassion to expend on her father) finally realized that Woodward and Bernstein had every reason in the world to "arrange" for an untimely demise for her father the second those two felt a need for more money to be made out of the Watergate issue.

In fact, I'm surprised Felt didn't realize this himself earlier.

He, above all, should have known what untrustworthy, lowdown, double-dealing, cheating, lieing and abusive folks the "Posties" can be~! And who can forget former CIA director Casey and how he died so soon after a few interviews with Bob Woodward.

This should be a lesson to every public official who puts himself in a compromising position with a "newsie".

BTW, a former House page had a cousin who used to deliver the grocery bag filled with steaks to Spiro Agnew every week.

The cousin was one of the first to report the guy to DOJ.

#15..I agree with you.

With that kind of money, his daughter could afford a lovely senior care facility...

...with round the clock nursing care and proper nutritious meals.

Some of these places are downright gorgeous, and some have private cottages or apartments.

Color me skeptical, but I hope you are being sarcastic. I have never seen a grimace take the form of a Colgate smile, and I am speaking from 51 years experience as a woman.

As for the grocery bag thing... yeah, that's the ticket. Just kidding. I had family members who lived and worked in DC. They used to tell bubba rumors well before the Monica thing came out. Yeah, yeah we all detest the man, but this is a little far fetched, I thought.

I was wrong about that, the rumors were fact.

So I keep an open mind on that until proven or disproven.

But I will argue to the death about that grimace thing...(if you are serious and not sarcastic). Deep Throat was THE mystery of my youth and now adulthood. If she had no clue of the public attention she would get, then not only does she have no class, she is stupid as well.

I didn't know he had an agreement with them. It is very interesting and I understand the reason now. I was watching FOX News last night and the Judge (Neopolitano?) said that Felt could be charged with bribery if he accepts money now for the information that he gave Woodward and Bernstein back then. He had information on an ongoing criminal investigation that he should have given to the special prosecutor and, instead, he leaked it to the press. That is the first part of bribery. To convict, he would have to have received money for it. If he does now, the statute of limitations would begin and he could be charged. Of course, he would not be due to his age and health. The Judge feels that this sets a dangerous precedent, though.

Also of note, Woodward is beating him to the punch with a book coming out next month. Additionally, Felt's story came out in "Vanity Fair" rather than allowing Woodward to release it. Since they were such "friends" you would think Felt would have allowed him to release it.

Just FYI, I heard on FOX that Bob Woodward spoke with Felt and found him not to be oriented, and therefore decided to write another (yes , another) book on his own without Felt's input. So that may be the source of the "dementia" comments. As to whether he's being abused, exploited, or neglected by his daughter, well, we don't know that, can't know it from here, but I'm a geriatric case manager and this much I DO know to be true: Most older folks, especially if they ARE demented or disoriented, don't like or do well in stressful, high-profile situations. It probably isn't the kindest thing that could be done, to parade dad before the press in search of their "fair share". Just a thought.

How can you possibly know what we all would "probably" do? I wouldn't like to think I'd take advantage of an extremely frail/elderly old man who had shunned this sort of media attention for years. Look, maybe she's taken fabulous care of him, and the garage apartment thing is nothing, could be a palace, but she certainly is enjoying trotting him out for the money. It just seems sort of sad, that's all. When he was in control of his own life, he chose not to talk. Now that he's NOT in control, it appears that she's not respecting his wishes and that's a shame.
