QUOTES:

Rumsfeld:

"Those privileged to live in free countries are forever in the debt of those who make that freedom possible," Rumsfeld said. "No force in the world has done more to liberate people that they have never met, than the men and women of the United States military. That's why the recent allegation that the U.S. military is running a gulag at Guantanamo Bay is so reprehensible.

"Gulags were a series of forced-labor camps in the then-Soviet Union where millions of Soviet people were literally worked to death. Soviet dictator Josef Stalin set up the gulags in the late 1920s and 1930s, and they lasted till the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991."

Rumsfeld said U.S. forces have caught at least 12 detainees released from Guantanamo Bay that were back on the battlefield involved in efforts to kidnap and kill Americans.

Bush:

"Under the Secretary General's leadership, NATO has been active in places like Afghanistan and training troops in NATO. And today we discussed the NATO mission in Darfur, to help deal with human suffering in that part of the world. So, Mr. Secretary General, I am proud to call you friend and proud to work with you, as the President of a contributing member of NATO."

"...Mr. President, I want to thank you for your leadership. South Africa is a great country. The President uses his position to not only better the lives of his own people, but to work to bring stability and peace to the region and to the continent."

(May 16 file photo) "President Bush urged Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on June 1, 2005 to lead the Middle East toward democracy with free and fair presidential elections, the White House said. White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the two leaders spoke by telephone for about 10 minutes and among the topics they covered was the start of the presidential election campaign in Egypt, and last week's referendum there and incidents of violence."

Dinner with the Powells this evening -- "President Bush on May 31 2005 said there were still diplomatic options available to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions without having to resort to a military strike. 'It's either diplomacy or military. And I am for the diplomacy approach,' Bush told reporters at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden. U.S. President George W. Bush is met at the doorstep by former Secretary of State Colin Powell at Powell's home in McLean, Virginia, May 31, 2005. First lady Laura Bush accompanied the President for dinner with Powell and his wife Alma."

"U.S. President George W. Bush shakes hands with his brother, Florida Governor Jeb Bush, at the end of a Bush-Cheney 2004 election fund-raising speech in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida in this January 8, 2004 file photo. George Bush, the president's father, would like to see another Bush in the White House someday, saying on May 31, 2005 that he would want his son Jeb to run for president when the timing is right. Jeb Bush has repeatedly said he does not plan to run for president in 2008, trying to dampen speculation that another Bush could be on the next Republican ticket for the White House."

Rumsfeld warned that any country that takes in Abu Musab al-Zarqawi will be viewed by the United States as associating with Al-Qaeda

Rumsfeld on Wednesday warned Iraq's neighbors not to provide medical care to al Qaeda's leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who the Pentagon believes has been wounded.

He surely doesn't look to me like a man who is breaking under the strain of his job (Rumsfeld).
