Cuban-Americans Set to Protest Santana Concert over Che Guevara Shirt
Human Events Online ^ | June 1, 2005 | Humberto Fontova

Millionaire rock and roller, Carlos Santana, was immensely proud of the elegant Che Guevara shirt he wore to the last Academy Awards. (For details see Che at the Oscars) But by wearing the face of a mass-murderer on his torso Mr Santana provoked nary a raised eyebrow, a snide comment, nor a peep of protest from the Mainstream Media.

Well, imagine Andy Garcia or Gloria Estefan wearing an elegantly embroidered Augusto Pinochet (who killed far fewer than Che) T-shirt to the Oscars or Grammys. Imagine the squawking.

I would applaud them. He was a hero to the nation of Chile.

I'm glad someone is finally going after this old fool. I left his concert last year when he referred to Bush in his "Evil Ways" song.

What's with the people wearing this dudes shirt? How did he become shirt worthy? I got the killing 16-18,000 side of the story, what's the other side of the story?

Is it the typical "He's not a terrorist that enjoyed a firing squad, he's a freedom fighter" BS?

Carlos needs to play the guitar and leave his politics to himself. The world would be a better place.

Being here in the S.F. (Socialist Frenzied) Bay area, Che shirts are a fairly common sighting. I always view those wearing those shirts as a sad testimony to the weakness of our educational system.

Why is it that old fools like this think that because people like to listen to their music or watch them pretend to be something they aren't while quoting words they did not write that somehow we give a flying crap about what they think about anything? It is the equivalent of asking the town drunk what the policies about public drunkeness and DUI ought to be.

The character Steven Hyde on 'That 70's Show' wore the shirt in an episode. I doubt 1 in 20 viewers knew who it was.

I dont think it is possible for me to agree with you more. I like Santana, I like a lot of musicians. The problem is that their political statements are just so stupid it overshadows my appreciation for their music and I gradually stop listening to them. (Ref Dixie Chicks for a band that is now persona non grata in my home)

Augusto Pinochet brutally put down communist insurrection and brought in an era of political stability and prosperity.

What did that drifter from Argentina accomplish?

Rather than re-write it, I'll justv repost a couple of my earlier commentaries on Che for you.

#1
"Once again, I'll weigh in on "Comrade" Che`.

He was nothing less than the coldblooded murdering thug as described by those who were there.

He craved status as a 20th century Simon Bolivar, uniting all of Latin America in a "Socialist Worker's Paradise", (with him and his cronies in charge, of course), and tried to export Cuban style revolution throughout South and Central America.

Sadly, some of the malignant seeds sown by him and his cronies led to problems in Nicaragua and El Salvador in the 70's and 80's, and to a degree are continuing in Chiapas and Guatemala to this day, and have resulted in the deaths of thousands of people on both sides.

What he got for all of his efforts was turned in by the very Bolivian Camposinos he pretended to fight for.

When he was wounded and captured, he begged Carlos Rodriguez (CIA) for his life, pleading that he was worth more "alive than dead". The rumors that he died a "hero's death" are a joke.

He was as wrong about that as he was in everything else in his life, because his image has far outlived any utility he would have served in life. I have personally met and spoken to a retired Green Beret who was there, and has the photos to prove it. Guevara died just as he lived, as a coward.

It is somewhat pleasantly ironic that modern-day capitalists are making money selling his image to psuedointellictuals and other political "in-sophisticates" in trendy Manhattan shoppes.

I think a line of t-shirts w/his image in a set of mil-spec crosshairs, or in a circle with a line through it (euro-fag "NO" symbol) would sell pretty well also".

#2:
"I couldn't agree more. Che was nothing more than a murdering thug. The people he was "struggling to liberate" in Bolivia were the very ones who turned him in.

He pleaded for his life like a little girl, telling Felix Rodriguez (CIA) that he was worth more alive than dead. But Felix let the Bolivians decide, and they decided to kill him. I have it on very good authority that despite the legend, he died poorly.

In retrospect, given the ubiquity of his image, in death as in life, he was as always, 180 degrees off.

Had he lived he would have been just another jailed bum (anyone heard of Noriega lately?).

Dead, he has morphed into a twisted cultural icon of the left.

In the final analysis, he was an abject failure. He failed at what he was born and programmed by his Marxist parents to be. Funny how it's always the doctors and teachers, huh?

And he certainly failed at his dream to become some sort of 20th century Marxist Simon Bolivar, uniting all of Latin America under one state (of course to be run by him and his communist cohorts).

Anyone who wears his image today is either a committed Communist, or a misinformed idiot (I know that's redundant)".

ENJOY

I recall seeing Clinton Portis weraing one during an interview on ESPN. I'm thinking this guy has no idea. Che would never approve of his millionaire athlete lifestyle.
