WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) -- The state elections director yesterday testified that he thinks the problems in Washington's incredibly close 2004 gubernatorial election were innocent mistakes. "I saw inadvertent mistakes and errors of human beings who were working their hearts out," said Nick Handy, who was appointed to the post. He said he disagrees with his boss, Secretary of State Sam Reed, a Republican who has called the problems in heavily Democratic King County "appalling." Mr. Handy testified as a trial to determine whether the results of the election should be thrown out entered its second week. Democrats are trying to defend the gubernatorial election of Christine Gregoire, who won by 129 votes in a hand recount after Republican Dino Rossi won the first two ballot counts.

"I saw inadvertent mistakes and errors of human beings who were working their hearts out,"

This quote could have been taken out of context. Perhaps he meant to say: "cheating their @sses off"?

The sad part is...the media here will not even begin to approach this issue from anywhere near the middle of the road. The only person to even attempt a look at both sides was Robert Mak on Kong T.V. locally (Up Front).

What I would say as a judge is if there were innocent mistakes made by "Human Error" then maybe it would be better to go back to the second machine count.

"I saw inadvertent mistakes and errors of human beings who were working their hearts out,"

Isn't that the phrase used by Howard Dean when he tried to explain "the scream?"

..."I saw inadvertent mistakes and errors of human beings who were working their hearts out,"

If he saw the mistakes and errors, why was he loathe to correct them and make the count as accurate as possible?
