The Kennedys were worried that the CPUSA was going to subvert King's movement, something that likely worried Johnson later when King spoke against the Vietnam war.
LOL, the CPUSA of that era couldn't take a clinton without Hoover knowing how many kernels of corn were included. Their de facto treasurer (and conduit from the Soviets), Morris Childs, wasn't an FBI informant, he was an FBI mole. President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Freedom for his work.

The point the media is missing is the possibility that Watergate was nothing more than J. Edgar Hoover's posthumous revenge.

This daughter is not the brightest. The Vanity Fair article says Bob Woodward showed up at their house in 1999 to talk with Felt. She didn't know who Woodward was, even after he introduced himself. She had never heard of the guy.

Now I can undertand Joe Q. Citizen not knowing who Woodward is. But by that time she knew that her Dad might be Deep Throat, and still didn't know who Woodward was?

Felt, Woodward, and Bernstein are now members of the Hate the United States crowd and join the ranks of such stalwarts as:
Jayson Blair
Dan Rather
Newsweek
Jane Fonda

I believe that Woodward and Bernstein would whore out their Mothers, Wives and Daughters for the BIG STORY! They really are pimps!

But I think Felt had the higher purpose, and has there ever been a deed so important, successful, and so right, for our nation?
That all makes a certain amount of sense. But there's another factor. Nixon and Gray were purging all the old Hoover loyalists at the same time. These guys had resources beyond imagination, and many of them felt that Nixon was giving them the shaft.

Hoover had the infamous files for a reason, to protect himself. With Hoover dead, Nixon wasn't intimidated. Perhaps he should have been, or perhaps the agents just said "hell with this guy".

What Felt did is exactly what Hoover would have done if threatened, leak information from his files to the press. As head of the investigative division, Felt had access to everything. As an old Hoover crony, he probably had access to the secret files. These could be used both directly and indirectly, to blackmail information from others. Or even make them come forward. Why exactly did John Dean roll over like Michael Jackson in prison? Conscience? Yeah right, that weasel never had one.

It's all conjecture, but it adds up. The best part is what it does to Woodward and Bernstein's historical role. The Great Heros Of The Media become nothing more than the stalking horses for the Revenge of the Hoover Gang. It's like finding out Lewis and Clark got satellite maps from a time traveler.

Our government needs oversight. We should never blindly follow, however since Watergate there has developed an attitude that everything the government does is some type of conspiracy. Everything is not a cover up. Because of the deep mistrust created from Watergate many Americans assume all classified information the press can't get their hands on is because the government has done something illegal or immoral and they are trying to hide it. That is paranoia and it is not healthy, especially in a time of war.

Haven't heard a peep out of them yet either.

"something about this coming up now smells."

It's all about the money. Felt's family wants to cash in on a big book deal before he loses all of his memory and passes away -- and before Woodward has a chance to pre-empt or cut them out completely with his own book. Almost everything these days is about self-promotion and cashing-in. What'll be really interesting is how the already-clear tension between the Felts and Woodwards over who'll enjoy the benefits will play out. Could get ugly...and public.

Deep Throat - illegally leaked FBI intelligence about Presidential malfeasance direct to the media instead of convening a Grand Jury - "National Hero"

Linda Tripp - Refused, when pressured, to lie under oath to cover up Presidential malfeasance, gave information to prosecutor - "Snitch" !

Someone care to explain?

"And Woodward and Bernstein just lost out millions they could have made and countless hours on their sequel book detailing all about Deep Throat after "his death". They can't be happy at all."

Not only that - they lose all control of the message of the story. In the days to come - Felt will be seen as a vengeful number 2 at the FBI who leaked classified documents because he was not elevated to take Hoover's place.

Had this not come out now - W&B would have positioned Felt as a man of conscience, a man who could not sit by while our government was on the verge of becoming a dictatorship. So - he did what he believed was right and helped expose one of the greatest threats to our way of life this country has ever seen.

Thier franchise would have remained intact and, W&B would have retained the tight control on the message for the remainder of their lives. Instead, they will spend the rest of their careers defending a snitch who made them very rich.
