Is it just me, or does Bob Woodward always seem to be hanging around old guys' deathbeds? Especially ones with demntia.

Dead men tell no tales.

At least, I think that is what Bob Casey whispered to me before he passed.

Good point. I missed that. Im still not convinced it is Felt. First, he is on record denying it, and he cannot confirm it now. Woodstein arent speaking yet either. And as someone else stated, this could just be the assumptions of Felt's family.

And in the grand scheme of things, I don't really care. Its just interesting speculation at this point.

The students werent unwarranted to stop consideration of non WH sources, as even Woodstein indicated through their sourcing that DT was in the WH.

Just to be clear, bugging the White House wouldn't tell you about an 18 second gap on the White House tapes...

I think the quote was: "One or more of the tapes contained deliberate erasures." There were a few people who knew about that fact, not just Nixon. Woodward said that the info was never wrong that he got from DT. All Felt needed to do was get the information and supply it and it would be believed as reliable, because of his track record. I maintain that Felt could get that information in various shady ways.

"White House lawyers say they first discovered the 18 1/4-minute erasure on the evening of Nov. 14. Haig has said he was told immediately and notified the President the next day. Sirica was not told until Nov. 21, after the President's attorneys had decided, for the moment at least, that there was "no innocent explanation" they could offer."

Now consider this:

"In the book, at page 333, the reporters revealed their story "quoted anonymously Deep Throat's remark that there were gaps of 'a suspicious nature' which 'could lead someone to conclude that the tapes have been tampered with.'" In the Nov. 8, 1973 issue of the Post, the same quote as in the book was attributed to one of their White House sources."

>>speaking out only because of conscience.<<

I have never been convinced such a thing is possible. People speak out to injure others or protect themselves.

I have no idea.

I claim no dog in this fight.

I never considered it too big a deal who deep throat was, personally and know more about it right now than I ever have - you certainly know more, I'm just posting stuff I'm seeing for the first time. ... I DO believe Nixon got screwed because he was trying to be overprotective of his staff - and that impeaching him was way over the top. I would have rather the Senate/House had looked for the treasonous leakers and stomp on them, but since that was never going to happen (and it hasn't and won't) it was ridiculous to be worried about this, and I haven't. If this was FBI leaking, as now appears possible, for whatever reason, I'm very angry they did not go this route - imprisoning the reporters for however long it took.

I imagine it possible that the reporters had Felt as a primary source, and decided they needed to hang on him a few miscellaneous items they had dug up elsewhere to throw people off his trail as well as to avoid revealing other secondary sources - and it sounds that would be completely consistent with everything but their "not a composite" contention - but right now, all I care about is using this against the Old Media louses if at all possible.

Your dependence on Felt's "denial" is completely incorrect due to Alzheimer's, by the way. Personal experience: it is inadvisable to hang anything on that interview - as you have already been told by others. It is my take that the kid throwing the "Felt is deep throat" around on the high school grounds is much more dependable - even though hearsay.

Like I say, though, I'm far more hopeful (than convinced) that this is true for a way to demean "journalists" and their "professors" and "schools" than I am for the story, now. It would also vindicate Nixon's judgement - and that, I've always respected even when that resulted in his getting fried, essentially, merely for being loyal to his friends.

My apologies. The actual quote was that there were gaps of "a suspicious nature", which "could lead someone to conclude that the tapes have been tampered with."

Not much difference between politicians and reporters, is there?

...though Felt himself has dementia and can't remember

Skimming through the thread here, will read all later, but this caught my eye.

He has dementia so he can neither confirm nor deny.

Why now?

Is he close to death? If he is DT then the answer would be to beat W & B to the punch.

If he is not DT then the answer would be to beat W & B to the punch.

I am skeptical at best. Very suspicious of family's motives. I caught the grandson saying [paraphrased] "DT was once considered a criminal, but now a hero......"

Did I see $$$$$ in Grandson's eyes?

I have argued, in the FR, for many years, that there was no doubt whatever about Felt being Deep Throat. He, as second-in-command at the FBI, was cashiered by the FBI shortly after 'Watergate'. He clearly violated a federal oath when he took on the role of Deep Throat and almost certainly lied under oath once again when he was cashiered by the FBI -- otherwise he should have been charged with that most serious of offenses (treason). Felt was always Nixon's own candidate for Deep Throat.

It will be interesting to see how things develop. Will Felt be obliged to 'face the music' for violating (probably multiple) federal oaths, AND will Woodward, Bernstein, Bradlee and Graham be charged with obstruction of justice for having, knowingly, protected the identity of someone they knew had violated his federal oath? Unlike Ellsberg, who escaped the worst of the justice he deserved, because his psychiatrist's office had been burgled by the Administration, the 'gang of five' I have just mentioned have no such excuses.

Interestingly, Woodward was found (and reported in FR and elsewhere) to have taken an extremely curcuitous route -- worthy of a spy thriller -- when he attended Felt's 90th birthday party. Felt was known, for many years, to have answered the phone by giving his residence as that of 'Deep Throat'. Felt is quoted as having said to his son: "I don't think (being Deep Throat) was anything to be proud of, "You (should) not leak information to anyone." He's very easy on himself.

That's not unlike Alger Hiss saying something of the sort when, as Ales, he secretly accepted a Stalin Prize for his efforts to subvert the U.S. government.

IIRC Colson served time from being a self-described "whisleblower". Something about leaking FBI files ...

IIRC, Colson leaked only one file.

I saw a stupid jerk laughing. Maybe some of us don't think his grandfather was such a hero. If they didn't want the press maybe his grandfather should have kept his mouth shut instead of doing an ENTIRE ARTICLE ON IT! Hello! Earth to grandson.

The tapes were turned over to investigators in early November, shortly after Archibald Cox was fired.

There's no reason to assume that White House lawyers knew what was on the tapes or that they knew anything about the erasures until after they were analyzed by investigators. I would think that FBI insiders would be among the first to know of irregularities, most likely before White House officials or Sirica.

(Except, perhaps, Rose Mary Woods. ;-)

It's been one of the long interesting mysteries in this country.

The only mystery in my mind is why Nixon didn't burn the tapes.

"The tapes were turned over to investigators in early November, shortly after Archibald Cox was fired."

The tapes, or the *transcripts* of the tapes?!

Keep in mind that Deep Throat had told Woodstein of the suspicious gaps in the tapes on or before November 7 (story made the November 8 print/delivery run).

You don't get that "gap" from the transcripts, either.

>>The FBI didn't know. <<

Being able to say, "I don't know" can also be said, "I heard about or suspected it, but I never confirmed it."

Most conversations amongst friends are believed by the listener and never confirmed. That does permit the listener to say, "I don't know".

Dang... now I'm craving a peanut butter and banana sandwich.

Me and Spartacus, too!

P.S. I believe it is spelled "sammich." Heh, heh, heh...

So, I guess Diane Sawyer finally has the 'Deep Throat' monkey off her back....
