Woodard and Berstein aren't commenting on Felt and the Vanity Fair article, so you're right about that. If Deep Throat is Felt, why wouldn't Woodard and Berstein confirm that after Deep Throat outed himself?
I still think Deep Throat is Al Haig but we will find out sooner or later when Woodard and Berstein reveal Deep Throat's identity.

A page I just read from a link I ran across on FR just now (I'll look it up) said that one of the editors or something at the Post thought that he probably made the smoking part up because he tried so hard to hide DT's identity and because they made such an over the top deal out of the smoking part.
Reagan was shot on my husband's birthday in 1981. April 15th (the date of the pardon) was fifteen days later. What gives?
Do you, or does anyone, remember there was some professor at Cornell (or was it Syracuse) who had a contest to go through the archives and figure out who deepthroat was? Didn't they come up with Felt's name? This would have been about 2 years ago.

"I don't think (being Deep Throat) was anything to be proud of," Felt indicated to his son, Mark Jr., at one point, according to the article. "You (should) not leak information to anyone."
I don't doubt that Felt leaked classified files to Woodward. Old-line liberals in the federal bureaucracy hated Nixon. I imagine there were many other leakers as well.
But the deep truth of Watergate is that there was not really much to leak. It all amounted to a second class burglary, in which Republican operatives used questionable methods to ferret out questionable activities performed by equally corrupt Democrats. Plus discussion on Nixon's part of making use of one FBI file against his enemies, which he decided not to use after all.
The real essence of Watergate was to take these not so stunning bits of fact and make them into the biggest propaganda campaign ever mounted by the American press. Nixon was destroyed by sheer vitriol and lies, with only a small admixture of facts to leaven it. The real Deep Throat was Woodward himself, with Graham and Sulzberger and the rest of the lying MSM behind him.
The name Deep Throat was nothing but a bit of clever disinformation to take the heat off the real perpetrators, Woodward and Berstein, and to give people the impression that deep secrets were somehow being brought to light by these heroic "investigative reporters."
Indeed. Tough to confess when you don't remember the crime, though.
Keep in mind that Mark Felt didn't smoke, either.

things like that are submitted to the president by a branch of the Dept. of Justice. I would be willing to bet that Meese or someone had this on an agenda to get done soon after Reagan took the oath. Frankly, if you think the pardon is going to be controversial, issuing it when most of the news coverage is going to be about the president's recovery from the shooting, is a good time to issue it...
Is it just me, or does Bob Woodward always seem to be hanging around old guys' deathbeds? Especially ones with demntia.

I never thought there was a real deep throat. So if deep throat was a figment of Woodward and Bernstein imagination, why shouldn't they come forward. If this guy isn't deep throat who is?
