Most likely voters continue to support President Bush's proposal to let younger workers invest some of their Social Security payroll taxes through personal accounts, a new survey finds. The poll by independent pollster John Zogby for the Cato Institute, which is being released today, found that when voters understood the benefits of personal investment accounts, including a better financial rate of return than the current system, the Bush plan was supported by 52 percent of Americans and opposed by 40 percent.

'The survey also contained a warning for the Democrats about how their opposition to any reform of the Social Security system is playing with the electorate.
"By an overwhelming 70-22 percent margin, voters believe that opponents of President Bush's proposals for Social Security reform have an obligation to put out their own plan for reforming the program," including 55 percent of Democratic voters, Mr. Zogby said in a report of his findings. '

heh-heh........

Similiar to the FERS TSP. Democrats are angry because you will have more control of your money. The AARP is a bunch of sheeple listening to the likes of kenndey/kerry/shrillary and the rest of the,"Doom&Gloom" party of Death. NSNR

The poll of 1,006 likely voters..."

Perhaps a little more credible than the polls of a few weeks back put out by the legacy media and AARP. Of course watch for the counteroffensive of AARP polls in the next few days.

I don't trust Zogby polls, but it will be interesting to see how this is covered in the press. The past few weeks the goofs on CNN's Capitol Gang and elsewhere have been cackling about how W had spent his political capital for no reason.

Even if this poll is only valuable as a loose indicator of the direction things are HEADING in terms of Bush's plan, it seems he's been Misunderestimated again. (Am reading the Bill Sammon book Misunderestimated, a good read.)

I seem to recall similar cackling in 2003 about Iraq and his capital from the '02 elections.

The last thing AARP wants is for it's client base to be independent.

Thanks for the post.

I didn't see in the full article the wording of the poll on which to vote. Anyone have access to the exact wording?

For those that are new to this issue, Zogby has been polling the idea of personal accounts for a number of years, and each year support for it has gone up in his surveys. He has the most credibility on the polling of this issue in my eyes because he has a track record of doing it for a number of years.

His results for the past polls were still on his website as of four months ago when I last looked.

The numbers do not apply to the current abomination the Bush administration has proposed. Only private accounts in general.

This whole charade about social security reform will be shortcircuted when we confirm some good conservative judges. Such judges can declare SS illegal (along with the minimum wage, zoning laws, and other such ridiculous limitations on our market freedom).

Yes the Americans getting Social Security would howl, but they are demographically irrelevant. I think most Americans would welcome the aboltion of Social Securitiy and the minimum wage.

I do not think the SS program will ever be terminated. President Bush's plan is a good step in the right direction. I do detest however 50 billion going for aids relief in Africa and 50 Billion for the the PA(muzlums) to build houses and infastructure. That 100 billion should stay here for the USA(Americans) only. TR had "The Square Deal".
FDR had "The New Deal".
GWB needs to use this kind of marketing and call his SS plan "The Better Deal".

If you want to sell policy, you need a simple, catchy name that people can feel good about. Had Newt Gingritch not bundled his proposals as the "Contract With America", he wouldn't have been nearly as successful.
