KGET-TV in California reports that a white social worker who wanted to attend a meeting of the National Association of Black Social Workers was told he was not welcome because of his skin pigment.
Bakersfield, Calif., social worker Brain Parnell wanted to attend the New Orleans meeting along with five of his colleagues because he often works with minority children. When he tried to enter, however, he was turned away.
"I approached the registration table and was greeted by a very friendly fellow who looked me in the eye and said, 'Are you black?'" said Parnell. "I told him that I'm not and he told me that the conference was only for people who were black and so I wasn't able to register to attend the conference."
"I was shocked," said Parnell. "I was surprised that in 2005, I could be singled out because of the color of my skin."

All the major cities in the South East have black only bars and clubs as well as black only colleges. It's something everyone knows but doesn't talk about !

I always get a good laugh when people like Spike Lee say there is no such thing as black racism because black people have no power. Even if that were true all it means is they don't have the ability to EXERCISE racist thoughts into actions.
What if it was a society of Armenian-American beet farmers? Italian-American electrical engineers?
So we're not good enough to socialize with them .. but we can give our tax dollars to support them .. Okay .. I get that .. but it stinks.
My church is filled with some of the most wonderful black people - husbands and wives with great kids. I have been in their homes many times. Too bad more blacks aren't like that.

If you are fine with racial discrimination, I suppose you do have a point.
Of course, the National Association of Black Social Workers have every right to restrict their membership, and their conference attendance, as they see fit. This is not a public matter, it's a private matter. The problem isn't that no one forced the NABSW to accept a white guy, it's that social-conscience-forces intrude upon such a private matter in other situations.
New Orleans is not known for its hospitality. They're known for good cajun food (jambalaya, dirty rice, etc), partying (bourbon st), historic vistas, racism and rain (lots of it)...never for hospitality. And I've lived in New Orleans for 30 plus years.

Very true but what you don't say is that whites CAN go into them.
The catch is that you MUST be with black companions!

This wasn't socializing...this was a convention of social workers--black social workers. This was a governmental meeting of governmental employees PAID FOR by those GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES (us!).
Let anyone socialize with whom they please. Don't, however, expect to have working situations for governmental employees in which you can exclude a RACE of people.
This was set up and maintained by a pack of stupid bigots.
You seem to have missed the point completely. Racisim is bad no matter who is being discriminated against. Reverse the skin color and see if this is a tolerable situation. Would a society of white social workers succeed in excluding blacks?
